Le fantôme de la liberté (1974)
A Comedy of the Arts.
The Phantom of Liberty
This film had me switching my emotions faster than a bipolar woman with PMS. These tableaux had you swinging one way to the next. In Bunuel's The Phantom of Liberty, you follow characters and switch stories with each person it focuses on. This type of movie makes you think about cultural relativism. The importance of this film is the overall tone. Even though you move from situation to situation it has the same sort of drama in each one. They begin with a bit of information. Then move into their problem and how odd it truly is. Each individual focus has its comedic relief and then its downfall. Right as you get into the story unraveling before you, its focus shifts to a minor character in that story line. It was a very interesting way of portraying different stories. I found this film to be extremely entertaining and would bring it up in conversation.
The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill (2003)
a thank you to this movie.
The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill was one of those most amazing films I have seen at the Nuart in Los Angeles. I saw this film with my father. who has had parrots for as long as i can remember. I may be partial to this film because of my bringing up. it just reminded me of visiting my family. It had everything i needed. I felt a strong connection with the entirety of this film. i absolutely loved the personal story telling. The connection to the parrots and the house. And it did not hurt to see it end in a love story. All in all i just really want to live in a secluded house with wild parrots all around. I would and i do suggest this movie to my friends even to film profressor's at SMC.
Idi i smotri (1985)
Compelling or Disturbing?
"Come and See" a Russian propaganda film.
This film was an eye opening heart shattering need to see film. As any holocaust film, you are overwhelmed with a feeling of compassion and anguish. As you delve into this film you want so much to help, and you forget you are at home. When watching, you notice how the director used specific angles and shots to actually make you believe everything you see is real. In a scene from this movie, there is a barn burning to the ground with dozens of people inside it. As you see this barn burning you see the doors being banged on from the inside. With all of these people being slaughtered and burned alive it flashes to a female German officer in her car. The camera makes eye contact with her. You see her look at the chaos and destruction and you see grin and eat a shrimp cocktail. Upon seeing that i was filled with rage.I wanted nothing more then to throw her in the burning building. I loved that this movie could do this to me. After this movie you will need some personal time to unwind. As good of a movie as it puts you in a weird place.
Dom za vesanje (1988)
just my view
Time of the Gypsies (A Home For a Hanging)
In this blunt and rugged film i found myself hating even the littlest things. Time of the Gypsies starts and ends with a vengeful bride. To me the opening scene to a movie should set the tone of how the movie will end. In this case it did just that. I like many others, always have a small hope that a movie with such down points will have a happy ending. When you put in your time and really give yourself to a movie you expect to be treated right. this is not that kind of movie. I being a twenty year old girl raised in California. Have a sort of skewed view of how a movie should be. You will be completely involved in this movie to the bitter end.(and may i just mention it is a long one!) when you give this much time to a movie you sort of bond with the characters. Having said that you just want to sit them down in this movie and try to change their attitudes. I would not suggest this movie to a person who enjoys the average American movie.
La otra conquista (1998)
intriguing
The Other Conquest to me was an eye opening tale of who knows best. This particular movie intrigues you to the point of 1,000 questions. After watching this movie i was compelled to delve in to researching Mexican history. A movie that grasps, and keeps my interest to the extent of not realizing the time that has passed is a winner in my book. As much as this movie gets your attention, you do however feel the need to overlook a few scenes if you are not religious. It has a feel of persuasion. towards a Christian view without shoving it down your throat. Although the movies story line is based on religion, it does not push you to choose a side. In my case i always find myself rooting for the under dog. In this case the underdog was to me at least, a dying religion.
