Biohazard 4 (2005)
A different take, but still great.
Probably the best game of 2005. Resident Evil 4 is different from it predecessors.
GRAPHICS - 10/10
Amazing graphics for the relevant consoles. There is a slight difference between the Gamecube and PS2 graphics but not much. Still I think the graphics for the remake are the best I've seen in a Resident Evil game.
CONTROLS - 8/10
Very good controls that require no real getting used to. The controls for the PS2 version are a little less responsive than those for the Gamecube but still good.
LENGTH - 10/10
The length of this when first played was extremely long. When I first completed this it took me between 15-18 hours. Although after numerous plays you will complete it faster and faster, it is still excellent value.
FEAR FACTOR - 7/10
Not as scary as the others but still eerie in parts. The moans and groans on the ganados and other monsters can be unsettling at times especially when you can't see where they are. A big difference between this one and the others is the camera angle. It follows constantly behind Leon so you can actually see where you are going instead of the different camera angles from the others where you couldn't at times.
DIFFICULTY - 9/10
Upon first play it will be quite hard, even on NORMAL mode. Prepare to face literally dozens of enemies at the same time. Some enemies can throw things at you to harm you which is incredibly infuriating especially when you are trying to reload and can't move. There is a wide variety of different enemies to face along the way. Although the puzzles are relatively easy, it is the vast amount of enemies which makes it difficult at times.
SOUND & MUSIC - 9/10
Great music and sound - even the character voices are decent this time.
REPLAY VALUE - 10/10
A load of stuff can be unlocked including the very addictive "Mercenary" mode. The PS2 version has more unlockables than the Gamecube version. These will have you go back an back for a few playthroughs. I was on the Mercenary mode for weeks until I finally mastered it.
Overall - 9/10
A different but RE excellent game. Some RE fans might be put off by this installment of the series, but I thought it was a great direction indeed.
Biohazard Ø (2002)
Zero tolerance
Resident Evil 0 is a great game to own and play. It shows how the events of the series started. It is an entertaining, frustrating and scary journey though a series of unusual environments.
Graphics - 9.5/10
Superb graphics give the game a real-life look. Every speck of detail can clearly be seen. The lighting effects are some of the best I have seen. However I still think the remake has the best graphics out of all of them.
Controls - 7.5/10
On first play the controls can take a little bit of time to get used to, especially the "zapping" system between the characters which can become a little bit annoying at times. However after a little bit of time you will soon get used to them.
Length - 8/10
This will take some tackling to complete upon first play as well as more after that.
Scare Factor - 9/10
The graphics, sounds and gameplay elements do the trick creating atmospheric environments. From spooky dim candlelit rooms to the moans and groans of zombies as well as other enemies. The camera angles also play a good part in the uneasiness in a way that sometimes you can't see what is ahead/around a corner meaning you are anxious to go ahead at times. Sometimes the camera will "follow" you around making it seem as though someone is watching you.
Difficulty - 9/10
Upon first play it will seem very hard. There are more enemies and sometimes ammo is scarce. They have also took away the item box so now you have to leave items that you don't want where your characters are standing. I liked this at first but it soon became a pain. The character zapping system at times is also difficult. Sometimes your characters will need to work together but can sometimes be miles apart from each other depending on whether you cooperate or go alone. Also if one character dies it is game over.
Sound/Music - 10/10
Great music and sound effects, sometimes quite terrifying.
Replay value - 7/10
Depending on how you complete the game a hidden extra will be at your disposal for you to go back and play.
Worst bit - those doors.
Overall 8.5/10
A very good game to add to your Resident Evil collection.
Biohazard (2002)
"You have once again entered...the world of survival horror..."
The remake of "Resident Evil" for the Gamecube is a top remake. This is one of the reasons that I purchased a Gamecube.
The graphics are superb, the atmosphere is quite chilling, the gameplay is top notch. There are new areas, enemies, puzzles and gameplay features. The original music is still here with a slightly remixed focus; from the un-nerving mansion corridor tunes to the soft and soothing "Save Room" theme and the delicate "Sigh of Relief".
GRAPHICS - 10/10
Easily the best graphics I have seen on the Gamecube - almost real in parts. Superb shades and lighting. Even better than Resident Evil 4 in my opinion.
CONTROLS - 7.5/10
A little bit fiddly at first but you soon get adapted to them in 30 minutes or so.
LENGTH - 7.5/10
A decent length. First playthrough it will probably take about 5-8 hours to complete depending on how good you are.
I just wish is was a few hours longer than was it is. First time around it will take some beating but after you have completed it you will know the specific routes, item locations etc.
If only there was a piece of programming within the game that randomised all item & enemy locations every time you played to allow for a new challenge.
FEAR FACTOR - 8.5/10
I'll admit that when I first played on this I was a bit nervous going around corners and walking past those "crimson heads" as well as other things.
The camera angles are perfectly placed in that you can't really see where you are going at times and it makes you slightly nervous not knowing what is ahead. As well as that, the graphics and lighting effects make the game superbly eerie with dark hallways and gloomy shadowy rooms. There are also a few other surprises and shocks in the game that just might just make you jump...
SOUND & MUSIC - 9/10
The music from the original is all here but is slightly different and remixed. Excellent for those nostalgic memories from the original.
REPLAY VALUE - 8/10
Extras can be unlocked depending on how you complete the game. These will have you replaying over and over again for some time.
OVERALL - 9.5/10
A superb remake. Great to re-visit the original RE with updated graphics and gameplay.
Here's me hoping for another Resident Evil remake for the PS3 or Wii in the future.
