Nil Battey Sannata (2015)
Its fun and also gives a message.
'Nil battey sannata', the movie title, is a phrase used for people who are complete laggards in mathematics. Chanda, the protagonist, is one of these people and is distraught at seeing her daughter, Apu, stumble in mathematics too, making her life's mission of educating Apu more challenging.
In one of the opening sequences of the movie Chanda attempts to motivate Apu to do better in studies, but Apu is reluctant because she believes her mother cannot afford to pay for her studies even if she passes the board examination. Determined, Chanda relentlessly preaches to her daughter the good that would come if Apu studied hard. When her words fail to influence Apu she approaches Dr. Deewan at whose home she works as a maid. Dr. Deewan patiently listens to Chanda and suggests an outrageous solution to the problem. Chanda is hesitant at first to enroll as a student in her daughter's school but her resolve to see Apu become successful allays her fears.
The principal of Apu's school does not like the idea of Chanda studying with kids but eventually grants admission to Chanda. Apu is furious to see her mother in her class as a student and vents her anger when they reach home. Chanda agrees to quit school if Apu outscores her in mathematics. With the help of her friend, Apu studies hard for the test and bests Chanda in mathematics. Chanda is happy to see her decision bearing fruit but her joy is short lived. Apu reiterates her assessment that a maids daughter will also be a maid and so its no use to study. Chanda rejoins school when it becomes clear that Apu only aimed at stopping Chanda from coming to school. Chanda's rejoining the school makes Apu very angry and she vows to avenge Chanda's treachery. A persistence mother and a stubborn daughter fight in a battle which brings them closer and ultimately teaches Apu what her mother meant the whole time.
The classroom fun in the movie is reminiscent of everyone's childhood and the witty replies of kids to the principal's questions are a treat to watch. There are not many characters in the movie but every one of them is significant, played brilliantly by accomplished artists. This movie is short and sweet and bitter, mostly sweet though.
The Jungle Book (2016)
This one is a gem!
Rudyard Kipling's classic tale The Jungle Book, now CGI-assisted, is a concoction of tactful direction, soulful music and powerful modern-day graphics. It has the right mix of everything and the feel of a blockbuster.
The movie opens with an intense chase where Mowgli competes with his canine brothers while his friend Bagheera, a black panther, guides him through the forest. Soon, the narrator tells us about a terrible drought that grips the land. The law of the Jungle forbids animals to hunt near the only source of water and everyone including Sher Khan, who holds a grudge against Mowgli and wants him dead, respect the truce. It is near this watering hole that Sher Khan threatens to kill the man-cub, Mowgli, when the rains return and the truce ends. This leaves the family of Mowgli, a pack of wolves, with a difficult choice— to face the wrath of Sher Khan by keeping Mowgli with them or to abandon him. At this point, Bagheera suggests that Mowgli be taken to the man village where he would be safe. Reluctantly, the wolves allow Bagheera to take Mowgli with him. But Sher Khan attacks them in the first part of their Journey.
Mowgli narrow escapes Sher Khan but is now alone and vulnerable in the Jungle. There, he meets Kaa, a large python, who tells Mowgli about his father and Sher Khan. Mowgli lets his guard down and is about to become Kaa's food when Baloo, the most likable character in the film, saves him. They get to know each other and Mowgli helps him in collecting honey for his hibernation, which later turns out to be an innocent lie. The story now reaches a point where Sher Khan has murdered Akela, the pack's leader, in an attempt to lure Mowgli back. Mowgli with his two powerful allies, Baloo and Bagheera, and some new friends have to fight Sher Khan not only to save Mowgli's life but to free the Jungle from Sher Khan's cruel rule.
The movie never presents a dull moment and its tasteful music complements the build up to some of the most exciting scenes. The voice of characters given by accomplished artists is nothing short of a treat. The graphics make up this movie's soul— the vivid landscapes and most importantly the animals, both big and small, have been rendered with life-like precision. Yet, the length of the movie is disappointingly short, forcing some scenes to look like they were running against a clock. But that is just about the only complain anyone can have against The Jungle Book.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
This is SCI-FI Drama not SCI-FI Action
I have not seen so many characters cry in one movie .Ceasar was shedding tears every now and then , later his son was also inconsolable ,why all of a sudden gary oldman cried I couldn't figure out ,the other lead human family did their bit too.
The movie had some good moments but every time the fun was hijacked by emotion which was oozing out of characters uncontrollably .The special effects were good as expected from a movie of this kind of budget , and the last act was very much predictable .Also never during the movie could you tell yourself you are watching a summer blockbuster , it had a common intensity level from the start which didn't decline but neither did it peaked.
Godzilla (2014)
This Godzilla is way way way better than any other monster , mutant, superhero ,alien , robot , . . . . . . .
Godzilla was supposed to be about a giant radioactive monster wreaking havoc on New york city . This was just about all you expected from this movie. If this was indeed the case , you are in for a pleasant surprise. The direction , the cinematography, the special effects , and everything else in the movie is just spectacular .It does not feel redundant , and it's bucket loads of fun.
The movie scores on every point , and that too majestically .Godzilla , himself is awe-inspiring,it's enormity and roar will blow you away .In a tsunami of movies with heavy CGI and special effects this one feels fresh .Gareth edwards has done a brilliant job in resurrecting Godzilla.
PS:just go and watch the mayhem.
Se7en (1995)
Great direction for a great story
Seven is a superb suspense thriller. The movie is binding with stellar performances by all the actors. Brad Pitt in his portrayal of a detective who is impatient with his partner is perfect , so is Morgan Freeman calm and calculated and , Kevin Spacey the serial killer who thinks his killings are justified .Gwyneth Paltrow also is brilliant playing a wife full of hopes.
The seven deadly sins are not a monarchy to anyone , each one of us in a way is affected and how deeply rooted they may be even in good people keeps us thinking long after the movie is over. The story telling is great and so is the direction , a must watch.
