Scooby-Doo (2002)
7/10
A clever and funny satire
14 February 2013
I remember seeing the first trailer to Scooby-Doo and thinking it would be a travesty. Then I saw the other trailers and they didn't help either, but after finally seeing the movie in theaters and again on home video. I came to a conclusion that Scooby-Doo is not a bad movie but a clever send up to the original series. The premise is that the mystery Inc. gang have broken up and gone there separate ways, but they are reluctantly paired up again to solve a case at a theme park in titled Spooky Island, which is like if Tim Burton took over Disneyland and made it his own. Now I know the characters are not as fleshed as they would in normal movie but what really works is the adult humor. This movie was clearly made for adults who grew up with the series and older teenagers who want to see a clever satire to the old show. I gotta admit I am a fan of old-school scooby-doo,so it was nice to see a movie that makes fun of it's self and yet homages it at every length. Now there are some obviously dumb moments like the cross dressing scooby and pointless celebrity cameo by Pamela Anderson but there are some generally funny moments, like when Fred is transformed into a hip-hop zombie, it's actually really funny to see Fred act like even more a tool than he usually is. The drunk Velma scene was very funny and surprising. Hell, even the evil plan is pretty f'upd, there plan is to to suck the souls out of a person, so a monster can climb into to there body and take over them, which is actually pretty neat. Scooby-Doo is in my opinion a first rate satire that honors the original show while making fun of it at the same time. For me it's a underrated classic.

The Evil Dead (1981)
7/10
Good but not great
6 February 2013
I have to admit that I saw evil dead 2&3 before this one, mostly because they looked more appealing. But I finally sat down and watched "The Evil Dead", but to be honest It was a little let down by the film. I was cool to see a young B.C but instead of being a bad ass like he was in the sequels, he reduced to a helpless pussy, who seems more at home with Ichabod crane from the Disney version of"Sleepy Hollow". I know that this was the first film in the series but I was just not expecting this. I think that when you compare it to the sequels, its the black sheep of the series, but if you accept it as it own movie, it a good popcorn - horror film that enjoyable enough for a viewing. Not great but not too bad, it's somewhere in the middle for me.

Mars Attacks! (1996)
8/10
One of Tim Burton's best.
4 January 2013
Tim Burton, has done many movies in his career but his funniest film to date is "Mars Attacks". The film is a love letter/spoof of the 50's era of sci-fi B movies,(which viewed today would be laughable). The plot is pretty paper thin but too be honest it's a Tim Burton movie. A group of cruel and tasteless aliens decide to destroy the earth for shits and giggles. While the army and a gong ho general want to nuke the aliens, the president and his peace loving professor want earth and mars to coincide but the aliens don't really care as they enjoy defacing famous landmarks and killing innocent people. The genius of Mars Attacks is that it's a comedy, while most alien invasion films are serious and depressing, Mars Attacks makes fun of the fact that it's a bad movie and does it perfectly. The cast is really second to none,Jack Nicholson is great as both the President and as sleezy alcholic casino owner Art Land. Other cast members include, Glenn Close as a bitchy first lady,Pierce Brosnan as a professor for the white house that wants to analyze and have peace with the martians,Danny Devito as a rude gambler, and even a young Jack Black as a redneck soldier. Mars Attacks is a very smart and funny movie because it doesn't takes itself seriously. I know Tim Burton never talks about this movie, but I think that he should be proud of one of the funniest spoofs ever made.

Batman (1989)

The best Batman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this film at a young age on VHS, I never really got the humour from the the Joker, but I loved the film and thought that it was the best comic book ever. After all these years I still love it, the plot follows Bruce Wayne, a lonely and mysterious man who secretly goes out to fight crime every night as the Batman. When Vicki Vale starts to date Wayne she find's out that he is not who she thought he was. While this happens,Jack Napier is sent by Carl Grissom to rob the Axis Chemical Plant but the whole thing turns out to be a set up by Grissom, and while confronting Batman, he falls into a vat of chemicals turning him into the Joker. The Joker now even more crazy then he was before decides to poison Gotham's like him when he puts the same chemicals that made him into products like shampoo, deodorant, etc. Batman foils his plans but the Joker has a dastardly plan to dump money onto the crowd at Gothem's festival ,painting him to be the good guy and batman as the villain. Batman then takes his balloons that were meant to kill the crowds at Gotham but did'not. the film ends with Batman finding out that the Joker killed Batman's parents and the Joker finds out that Batman is Bruce Wayne. This film is one of my favourite films of all time and unlike the inferior sequels, the film is a hell of a good time. Micheal Keaton is superb as Batman/Bruce Wayne. Even though, he is'not like the Bruce Wayne from the comics, he actually makes the character interesting. And as Batman, he's BAD-ASS.Jack Nicholson portrays one of the best screen villains of all time (ranks up there with Darth Vader in my opinion). At times, it seems like he steals the show but that's Nicholson for you. Tim Burton really nailed the character, he made Batman a great screen hero and the Joker a great screen villain. here's looking at you Tim, for making the best comic book movie.
