Kiseijû: Sei no kakuritsu (2014)
Yet Another Reason To Savor The beauty of Anime
**This review is done by a guy who watches/plays a lot of action/violent movies, games and anime... and yet the dumbstruck reviewer finds the prominent theme of Parasyte to be way better than just mindless fighting.**
Parasyte is something of a one time enchantment. Just one season and thats just it. Its something you get when elements like action + sci-fi + gore + romance + psychology are added and created by the godlike Japanese. Let me say that after 5-6 years of me turning into an adult, this is the pretty much the one that brought me close to uhh... crying, something that I never do. It made me all giddy up inside with the story driven around a high school guy with an intelligent alien as his right hand, how his perceptions about being a human and how he views humanity changes, how he becomes inhuman (mentally, NOT physically) to the point where its visible to near and dear ones. Love life aside, the protagonist often ponders about how he got this way much like we think at night about ourselves. But its the essence of the protagonist's mental/psychological change that takes the cake. He concurs that regardless whatever humans go through, certain human elements (read: compassion, envy, self-preservation,but also sacrificing oneself for the greater good etc.) can never be given up, for they are in our blood, in our DNA (though I might be overstating a bit!).
Also, the pain and suffering of losing a friend (who has a crush on you and you know it) is beautifully depicted and enhanced by the heavenly music. Oh, the music in this anime plays with your heartstrings, I kid you not. And this comes from a guy who isn't affected by romance genre. Im not going ahead and praising the action and the boss-battles (well implemented), you will have to treat yourself to it but the music really is divine, combining piano with dub-step, it gets your heart pumping. I personally award 11/10 for the BGM. Trust me when I say, the music is on par with Shingeki No Kyojin (Attack On Titan). A segment of Episode 02 will tell you that, you will know what Im talking about once you hear it. I actually watched that segment repeatedly ~20 times, just to hear the BGM.
It was this combination of awesome elements mixed together beautifully that had driven me to binge watch the entire dubbed series. My only *minor* sorrow (not disappointment) is that I probably will not get to watch a sequel of this legendary franchise, for the manga this show is based upon, ended 20 years ago.
I have already (personally) recommended this to all my friends and will do so here, because you will do yourself a big favor by witnessing this anime. Like I mentioned, for an action- maniac, I barely got into describing the tense action sequences. Treat yourself and go for it, its on par with Tokyo Ghoul (Season 1) and a great experience.
Long Live Japan, Long Live Anime!!!
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Modern Age Depiction of the World's Finest Superheroes
This movie was probably the most polarizing superhero movie of this decade. Forget Marvel vs. DC fanboys, even DC loyalists are finding it hard to ascertain the level of the movie. Bear in mind, I personally enjoyed this movie very much and this might not be the case with other viewers as everyone has their own perspective of the MOST legendary superheroes of all time. Obviously, not everyone will be satisfied. Right from the start, we get thrown in the action as the movie continues right off where Man Of Steel ended. And since a batman movie is not complete without a little homage to his childhood tragedy, we get a rebooted taste of that as well. Not even one moment is of slow pace and the audience will be just glued to the edge of their seats (guaranteed). Oh the acting. You will rarely find the caliber of performances this movie comprises. Special points go to Henry Cavill, who was definitely faced with a challenge with role of donning the capes. His facial expressions are extremely well played. The looks of shock and despair are done excellently by him (If you don't believe it, notice his expressions of betrayal and confusion when the Courtroom explodes or how he is surprised when Batman blocks his attack for the 1st time) It boasted in the trailers and it delivered. Eventually the long-awaited fight ensues. Zack Snyder has delivered the best (bar none) 1 on 1 superhero clash. He goes all-out and delivers the best fight of the year hands down. Eventually the villain turns out to be, you guessed it (yes YOU), Lexy-boy-Luthor. Overall, the final boss is revealed and a great power struggle ensues. The fight is one of the best cinematic experiences of the decade. If you went and expected shallow fights with mindless destruction, weak and characterless enemies, with innumerable tired jokes & one-liners (Im referring to you, AVENGERS!!!), you will be thoroughly disappointed. The movie is way too serious and outright destroys any Avengers film made so far. Oh and the league is soon to be founded.
Godzilla (2014)
Not One Of The Best Kaiju Movies... But a Legendary One At That
Im no stranger to the Gojira franchise. I've seen some, if not most, of the devastation Godzilla has caused in the history of cinema. And the '98 disaster did not miss my eyes either. Truthfully, last years Pacific Rim had my raised my expectations, to the point where I was hoping there'd be a boss fight every 20 minutes. That flame inside me was somehow snuffed when the movie turned out to be quite the opposite. The movie is like the canon fodder for its own climax. Despite the movie showing imminent clash of the monsters, there is nothing that intense up till the interval.
But the way it builds up the tensions, the way it presents the iconic kaiju and of course the carnage that ensues, that alone made me confident that the post-interval would be a complete blast. And till the end the movie is guaranteed to entertain even the hard-to-please fans. 'This Godzilla' indeed has a better future, I thought.
Sure, it annoyed every movie-goer to see the first boss-battle as a third-person through a news footage, but that gets compensated post interval. The only reason it gets a deduction is because it truly isn't the protagonist. In His own movie. But isn't that what cliffhanger movies and games have been doing for more than a decade? And further more, since Toho disowned Zilla'98, making this the first American Godzilla, isn't the first of every monster franchise presenting things in a slow and steady way. But thats not saying much, given the fact that Aaron Johnson gets a bigger piece of the pie. We get to see his character right from childhood from the beginning to where he's married with a 5yr old son. This is the part that annoys me in every monster movie (except Pacific Rim), the human guy, actually the supporting actor gets to be the protagonist while the Main guy/protag/antagonist gets demoted.
Despite all these nuances, you still get the visual treat as you witness the largest Gojira to date in all his glory. His war cry, his desperation, his cries of pain, of anger and of victory is completely out of the world, as are also complemented by his facial expression. Clearly it wins over us, gaining lost fans in the way and placing a mark through time. Im all good for sequels and congrats to the team behind its creation.
