Lung foo moon (2006)
A fun movie with A+ action
OK firstly I have to just say that I watched this movie on Netflix with English Subtitles and I was disappointed with the overall movie but then I re-watched it online in it's original language Cantonese with English subtitles and it really makes a huge difference.
The English dubbing is so cheesy and they even mistranslated a few important lines which cleared a few things up for me that I had been confused about! I won't say what they are for spoiler purposes but if you can find the Cantonese I suggest that 100% over the English dubbed.
OK on to my review:
This movie is worth watching for Donnie Yen's fight/action sequences alone. He is top notch as far as martial arts skills go in my opinion and while he usually doesn't do a lot of wire work in his films in this one he does some but it adds to that comic book feeling. He is so kick-ass in this movie that I have re watched his action scenes over and over again. And...he does it all in leather pants!
This movie obviously doesn't have the budget of Hollywood films so the CGI created environment parts of it are lacking but I believe it still works since this is supposed to be based off of a comic book. Of course having a bigger budget would have taken this film up a to a higher level.
A little more explanation of the characters is needed and they could have utilized the musical soundtrack more to add to the intensity in some scenes. However, I think Donnie Yen's action sequences make up for the lacking parts in this. Overall I find it to be a fun movie with great scenes from Yen.
I am a fan of movies like Tomb Raider so if you don't like that movie you probably won't like this one just because it has that same kind of vibe to me.
I really liked one reviewer on here who basically said if your going to watch this and take it too seriously then your wasting your time, they are 100% right. This is one of those "for fun "movies and is not meant to be some gripping, emotional story. It's meant to be fun and have things in it that go beyond reality.
I also really find it to be a movie that grows on you. And once again Donnie Yen is fantastic if I had to judge just him my rating would be 10 stars for his action directing alone.
Wing Chun (1994)
Lovable characters, great action and slapstick all in one!
I absolutely love this movie and have watched it more than once already! It is so fun and it has that slapstick humor style partnered with action sequences. Donnie Yen is fantastic as always and so charmingly adorable in this movie. Michelle Yeoh does a great job of convincing you she really knows Wing Chun and utilizes her dancing abilities to bring that to life.
I absolutely love the characters, that is what really makes this movie shine apart from the action. Character development. The characters are so likable, I love the Aunt she is hilarious actually even the bad guys are likable! The action scenes are really well done and the slapstick element makes them both fun and funny.
It's such a unique combination of action/martial arts, humor and romantic comedy I don't see how this movie does not have higher ratings! This has become one of my favorite movies!
Sai hak chin (1990)
A fun movie with fantastic fight scenes!
First off, apparently there at one point was a different exported version of this movie. I recently watched it on Neftlix and have verified that I watched the original edit of this film but with English dubbing.
I wonder if some reviews are based off of the alternate exported version that has a completely different ending. You can see notes on IMDb for the differences between the two which are rather substantial but not without spoiling the ending. I suggest watching it off Netflix if you can.
Anyway, I think this film was a lot of fun. Donnie Yen does it again with his amazing martial arts talent and action directing. The fight scenes were an awesome display of his abilities and very enjoyable to watch.
I found the characters to be likable and those saying that Rosamund Kwan's character is annoying, well duh she's supposed to be a pain which is why she drives Donnie's character nuts the whole movie. I thought it made for good humor.
This movie is from 1990 so it still has that 80's feeling to it but I didn't find it to be overly cheesy or anything. I actually liked seeing that Donnie wasn't a cop this time but rather a retired cop post divorce thrown into one bad situation after the next.
Overall I found it to be a fun movie with really well done action/fight scenes.
