Thithi (2015)
8/10
11 Days of Life in a Village Captured Skillfully
18 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes it gets challenging to keep things realistic and straightforward, be it in life or films. Naturalistic acting and realistic direction influence a movie's acclaim. Thithi integrates both almost perfectly.

Realism at its best, Thithi is a fantastic depiction of everyday life in a village with interesting characters. Events transpiring in the next eleven days following the death of a 101-year-old man named Century Gowda (quite an amusing name) in the village of Nodekopallu in Mandya have been appealingly captured in a two-hour time frame. Effectively using non- professional actors, Thithi brings out and intertwines different facets of human nature – greed, lust, insecurity, anger and love – which are commonly witnessed in everyday life.

Employing non-professional actors takes me to Robert Bresson's films (like Pickpocket and A Man Escaped) and his style of filmmaking. Thithi is nearly Bresson-like in its use of non- actors, and portraying how life usually is and how events organically occur. Thithi is also brave filmmaking at its best – brave because of its usage of non-actors, absence of songs (typical in Indian movies), lack of highly climactic points and even background score! And yet it works.

This no-nonsense, light-hearted film begins with Century Gowda's death and simply ends post his thigh (funeral). Witty, clever and casual, this slice of (village) life film is made to look effortless and grows naturally as it progresses. This is a funeral not to be missed, though it might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Landmark movie in Indian cinema that fails to satisfy and live up to its hype
19 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
On one side, #Baahubali - The Beginning is a landmark movie in Indian cinema and most importantly, on the other hand, it falls short in flow, narration, storytelling and visual effects (yes I know they spent a bomb, but still got it wrong at places). Here is my two cents on why this highly anticipated and hyped movie didn't work for me.

Baahubali is a massive movie in terms of visuals, vision and execution. I believe it is the first Indian movie to be created on such a grand scale, which is a great landmark for Indian cinema. Prabhas looks godly and Rana Dagubatti fits perfectly into the shoes of an evil-minded, selfish man who deceitfully rules Mahishmati kingdom. Supporting actors have complemented the movie very well.

On the flipside, the movie lacks flow; at places it feels like scenes are stitched together. First half feels stretched with songs. Narration is poor. Apart from the waterfall shot (which has been beautifully created) and the war towards the end, the visual effects lacked finesse. One such instance was in the first 15 minutes where a lady saves a child by drowning herself, holding the kid single-handedly above the water level. It was evident that the water around her is artificial. There are other scenes which lack quality VFX.

Baahubali also borrows storytelling elements from typical, formulaic Indian cinema - a tortured mother's gut feeling that her son is alive and will come back, continuously circling close-ups of an anguished and captured person without revealing identity for creating suspense, unnecessarily glorifying the 'hero' and many more. The KILIKI language, which was specially created for the Kalakeya tribe, was unintentionally funny.

It was also in the news that every character has equal importance in this movie, which explains those separate character-driven posters. Actually, there is lack of proper characterisation and several interesting characters hardly get screen space.

Even though the movie ended with a twist, it never aroused that eagerness to watch Baahubali - The Conclusion in 2016. The (over) hype has definitely worked in the movie's favour in terms of box-office collection, but on the whole failed to really connect on an emotional level.

It's Certain! ‪Kangana‬ is The Queen of The Hindi Film Industry Today
26 May 2015
‪[‎No Spoilers Review]‬ -- It's certain! ‪Kangana‬ is the queen of the Hindi film industry today. If Queen (the 2014 movie) did not vouch for that, Tanu Weds Manu Returns (TWMR) makes it crystal clear. If she can project two completely opposite characters -- a bad-ass woman with a killer attitude and an independent, tough-outside-soft-inside Haryanvi athlete with unusually huge incisors and a freckled nose -- in a time frame of 121 minutes so convincingly, then you ought to agree with me that she is one of the best actresses of her generation.

Predominantly a true laugh riot, ‪TWMR‬ can be considered as an addition to the list of movies, which have turned out to be better than their prequels. Although Kangana steals the show, Madhavan, who blends extremely well, cannot be ignored for his simplistic yet effective portrayal of her husband. Of course, Deepak Dobriyal's (Pappiji) supporting act and comic timing completely takes this movie to another level. If you particularly remember him for the hilarious 'Jai Mata Di' scene in the prequel (like I do), he will take you by storm in TWMR. With great direction and a brilliant supporting cast, you can be sure that TWMR will be two and a half hours of your time well spent.

Roy – Only Style, No Substance
15 February 2015
‪#‎PieceOfAdvice‬ If you are planning to watch ‪‎Roy‬, you might want to reconsider your decision for the following reasons:

One. Around 2 ½ hours long, the plot is so irritating that you will get frustrated by the end of the movie - probably even end up pulling your hair.

Two. The climax is so stupid that I'm certain you'll say to yourself, "Okay, what the f**k just happened?"

Three. After the movie, you will only be able to recall expressionless Arjun Rampal smoking and Jacquelin's red lips – at least that's what I did.

By the end of the movie, I was wondering the conversation between the producers and director of Roy before making it could have gone something like this:

Producers (T-Series): Bollywood is touching new grounds with movies like GOW, Paan Singh Tomar, Queen, Shahid, etc. We also want to make a very "different" movie.

Director: I have a very cool concept in my mind. How does a movie inside a movie sound?

P: Wow, that sounds "different". Let's rope in Ranbir Kapoor. He's a "different" actor.

D: I have lots of ideas to make the movie "different" and arty – great camera angles, close ups, stylish scenes, great locations and a (wannabe) complex plot.

P: Sure. Do throw in a party song with slow motion dance moves, a love song, a peppy song that pops out of nowhere, a sad song and couple of kisses.

As a result, we have Roy – only style no substance.

PS. If you (unfortunately) end up going for it, take a tub of popcorn (not large) so that it will last for the entire duration of the movie.

If it takes Rajkumar Hirani 5 years after 3 Idiots to make a movie, I'll wait for 2019 to watch his next!
19 December 2014
‪#‎MyReview‬ ‪#‎NoSpoilers‬ Amidst all the trash that comes from ‪Bollywood‬, Rajkumar Hirani can never go wrong with his ability of story telling.

Well written, great performances, rib-tickling Bhojpuri-styled dialogues and an excellent screenplay (especially the first half) is what defines ‪#‎PK‬ for me. Although there were some traces of Paresh Rawal's OMG - Oh My God! mixed with slight unrealism plus some ordinary VFX, it does not matter -- Aamir Khan nails this brilliant satire.

Don't miss this ride! If it takes 5 years (after ‪‎3Idiots‬) for Rajkumar Hirani to create such a simple yet effective picture, then I'll wait for 2019 to watch his next.

PS. A small surprise in the end. An indication of a sequel? Probably. I hope.

Remo and Prabhu Deva, with all respect, please stick to CHOREOGRAPHY!!!!!
26 February 2013
Well, this is totally my opinion of the so-called "India's First 3D Dance movie".

Bad story, horrible acting (especially Prabhu Deva), decent music and F.A.L.T.U direction. Dance was the sole winner in this movie.

When Prabhu Deva speaks, I couldn't help but wonder "what the hell is happening". There were instances where I got furious too. Having said that, India's best and the most excellent dancer is Prabhu Deva. My respect. But this movie was more sort of a dance show! Though all the dance sequences were amazing.

What I've learned and decided after seeing this movie is - No more watching movies directed by Remo! Waste of money and time. It's better to see a dance reality show :P

Story - 2/10 Direction - 3/10 Acting - 4/10 Dance - 11/10

Truck Loads of Background Music & Stylized Direction Makes This Movie More Than Worth a Watch!
4 February 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This is my first movie of 2013. I had planned to stay away from those big releases like Race 2 after watching the trailers itself.

Anyway, David is really high on style and personally, I loved that aspect of the movie. The background music gave a good flow to the movie. Out of those three stories, Neil's story was far more on the action and drama side. It was pretty intriguing too!

Even though I watched the Hindi version, I'd heard a lot about Vikram. His acting was really good and his story line was more on the comical side. He acted really well as a drunk fisherman. Though, I feel his story angle was a little weak. May be it could've been written better. Over all, the story was decent but the performances and direction were brilliant.

I loved the music too! Damadam mast kalandar was mixed nicely. Background music was awesome.

All of them looked pretty apt for their characters and fitted very well in their shoes. A special mention would be Neil's dad(Iqbal Ghani) in the movie. What intensity in his acting! The guitar guy's acting was also decent. Personally, I didn't like the fact that the guitarist David turned into a father(church) in the end. I thought that was a little dumb.

The movie might not be perfect and yes, it does have some flaws but the director is high on talent and gets creative stuff on the screen.

This is a very different kind of a cinema, far far away from those 'typical' movies. Bejoy Nambiar has experimented really well. The story had a few weak holes but the best part of the movie was it's direction and performances.

It's Al Pacino...all the way. Whoo-ah!
14 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Well, the story basically revolves around Lt. Cl. Slade and Charlie Simms.

Al Pacino is such just an exciting actor to watch on-screen. His acting as a retired blind officer is brilliant, top-notch. Chris O'Donnell gets his act right too. He has supported Al Pacino well.

The movie has been written well and the characters fit perfectly.

Those last 15 minutes or so, everything just comes alive. To be precise when Al Pacino says "But he's not a snitch". Following that moment, it's one helluva an awesome speech.

The movie might have seemed a little stretched but didn't bother me much.

P.S. - If you're an Al Pacino fan, you'll love this movie. If you're really not one, then I'm sure you'll be one. He is simply superb.

Dabangg 2 (2012)

Dumb-bangg 2
27 December 2012
First things first, Dabangg was way better than Dabangg 2.

I'm not a huge Salman Khan fan. Yes, I like him and I liked him better in Dabangg. Dabangg was something fresh. Though it had all those 'typical' action stuff, it was funny, witty and watchable.

Dabangg 2 does not have that dabangg-ness! In fact, I felt, the songs were not that great at all. Not very pleasing to my ears. It's like they've just been copied and pasted into the movie. Fevicol Se was okay but when Malaika came on the screen, she brought a smile to my face. She's so elegant!

The dialogues in Dabangg were much much better. Here good dialogues and all the funny stuff were few and scattered.

In the end, Dabangg 2 didn't have that punch like Dabangg. May be a one time watch. Those who haven't, just wait for some time. A television premier will be around the corner.

The Answer Lies Within....Really?
4 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
You can love him or hate him but you can't ignore his movies. Yes, I'm not an Aamir Khan fan but a big fan of his movies. He's got his own style and attitude.

Anyways, coming to Talaash, the first half was excellent. It was gripping and had all the elements for the perfect second half. A good suspense was created in the first half by leaving things incomplete. But I think the lame second half ruined it all. The movie could've been excellent.

I would give a 4/5 for the first half and 2/5 for the second half. I still thought there would be some twist in the end that would put a full stop to the 'ghost' story. But nothing like that happened.

I was really furious by the end of the movie and I still couldn't believe Aamir Khan actually agreed to do this movie.

Aamir Khan's acting - 10/10 looks - amazing with the moustache. Rani - natural flawless acting & Kareena was good too! Nawazuddin Siddiqui - you rock!!!

A Sweet Laddoo
9 October 2012
English Vinglish, without a dull moment, is a unique and a fresh movie directed really well by Gauri Shinde. What a come back it has been for Sridevi after 14 years. She hasn't lost the touch. She actually casts a spell on the viewers.

The characterization and casting was spot-on from Sridevi's family, her kids, husband, mom-in-law to her mates at her "English Tuition" classes.

I call it rib-tickling because of the characters in the English class. They were so funny be it the Pakistani, Madrasi or even the French guy.

The music by Amit Trivedi was also good and the background music makes the movie flow elegantly.

Kudos to Sridevi and Gauri Shinde.

Kya Super Lame Hai Hum!
7 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Kya Super Kool Hai Hum? Really? I mean this wasn't even like a movie it was just like joining different pieces of different puzzles and making absolutely no sense!

Firstly about the cast, I mean Ritesh Deshmukh has great acting skills. This movie was a dud especially the first half but it is only Ritesh's comic timing that was commendable. Tusshar Kapoor -- well he was really good only in Golmaal but in this movie his over acting is quite evident. Actually it would've been better if he had his mouth shut in this movie too. The two female leads were just okay. Mr. Anupam Kher, the versatile and the brilliant actor (whenever his name comes across I remember "A Wednesday" and many more amazing movies he's been a part of) was just wasted. He was rib-tickling in Kya Kool Hai Hum though.

Secondly about the direction and the story, I just felt like pulling my hair! I mean for instance in a scene Tushhar Kappor and Ritesh Deshmukh are shown at "La Whore Dhaba" (actually Lahore Dhaba) where they ask for Cappuccino's and obviously the cook at the Dhaba exclaims "Yeh Cappuccino Kya Hai?" that's where the director adds the song " Hum Toh Hai Cappuccino"!

Good, really funny jokes are few and just scattered and distant. Most of the jokes are really lame. Comedy scenes are really rare.

Lastly I would really prefer Kya Kool Hai Hum than Kya Super Kool Hai Hum. That movie I had really enjoyed. I had real expectations from this movie because I had loved Kya Kool Hai Hum.
