The Signal (2014)
Small budget, huge effort
The Signal was a very surprising movie. It seems to take all the successful elements of previous sci-fi ideas, and turn it into it's own. Although it is obvious the budget was very low, it seems it was spent very decisively. The moments with special effects also take place at the same time story development happens. A mind-blowing use of CGI coincides with emotional impact, as (spoiler alert) our hero discovers his legs have been replaced by alien technology.
This movie is not without it's flaws, of course. I'm sure there's a few plot-holes in there, but the story moves too fast to notice, the concept is far more important than the tiny glitches. It also gets a bit cartoony, but this doesn't take away from the overall experience.
The Signal announces to the Sci-Fi genre, that there are fresh stories out there, and brave Directors willing to push the boundaries. I give this an easily earned 8/10.
