The Tomorrow War (2021)
A bad Interstellar
Honestly I don't know how Chris Pratt does this but he has managed to star into too many action flicks that are devoid of any soul... Not much to say here... I expected nothing when I watched this, 10 mins into the movie I thought I would b happily surprised, but I was then brought back to the realization that this is nothing more than a bad action flick. Which is not a bad thing per se but it felt like it was taking itself too seriously and was almost trying to follow on Interstellars footsteps. Alas no Christer Nolan directs this movie and Chris Prat is no MMC.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Meh...
Better than the original one which was unwatchable. But it's still a very very mediocre movie. It has nice aesthetics and that's about the only good thing this movie has going for itself...
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Bad
No characters, no real story, nothing to write about.. aesthetics were nice, soundtrack was cute and the idea interesting. But as revenge stories go this was just bad
Shingeki no Kyojin (2013)
masterpiece
Forget anime. This is one of the best shows ever created and comparable to Game
of Thrones in terms of character depth, lore, and plot twists, with the difference that AoT gets better as the show goes on. And my god does it start with a bang.
Klaus (2019)
Unexpectedly beautiful
Wasn't expecting that. Beautiful movie. Best animation I've watched in a long time
The Boys (2019)
Let's hope it delivers
I think the show is really original and is a breath of fresh air in an era where the superhero genre has been at a stalemate with the likes of MCU and its obsession with PG movies. That said I fear that coming into season 2 the show is losing focus and does not know how to deal with the -vastly different than the source material- path it set itself on. As of episode 5 season 2 the show shows repetitiveness (the 'I won't tell if you don't tell' approach has been used on TOO many occasions) and does take decisions they either (seem to?) lead into nowhere or don't make sense (kimikos take on the mob bosses for instance makes sense in the comic series but here it feels it's coming out of the blue). The genre needs the boys to be good and I do hope it delivers by the end of the season
Westworld: The Mother of Exiles (2020)
milking a good idea
Its been said that a good story either further develops the plot or the characters.
This show does neither anymore. action scenes that serve no purpose, super smart guys have a completely different angle now and appear as pawns (MIB), Maeve developed Neo powers in the real world with no explanation, Caleb follows Dolores for no apparent reason etc. Ok this last part I really dont get.. 'You were nice to me and now im gonna help you because you remind me of myself'. 'I will follow you because I am angry with the system'. This Caleb-Dolores story is as unconvincing as anything. Show has been reduced to guessing who is and who isnt Dolores or who is and who isnt a host .. Who cares?
Contratiempo (2016)
mediocre
I am writing this so it validates for a long enough review. Having said this and without wishing to elaborate here's how i felt about the movie:
Eh...
Aquaman (2018)
Why is this so highly praised?
So i just came back from watching this. And for once I wanted to see a DC movie and feel like it was worth my time. Here are my thoughts:
-OK visuals..
-The undersea world looked like it had some potential. It would be interesting to see more about daily Atlantian lifes or how the other, seemingly very different kingdoms, function. Sadly James Wan did not want to elaborate on that.
that pretty much sums up all the good points of this movie. Now to the bad ones:
-no character development or any attempt to make the hero resonate with the audience which is very weird, aquaman being an origin movie
-very poor acting (especially Momoa.. My god.. ) and unexisting chemistry between actors which is almost funny at some points. Regarding the acting Aquaman is supposed to go from super-confident in the beginning to somewhat scared/sceptical by the middle of the movie by what's at stake. Movie tells you that's what's happening at least. Momoa never portrayed that in any way. Same dude throughout the movie saying his lines.
-Music selection. Aquaman is portrayed intentionally or unintenionally being somewhat goofy/witty/smartass. And the music background playing in every one of his scenes sounds like you are watching The Dark Knight. Only darker.. But goofy.. Makes sense.. No..? Ok moving on..
-Jokes were between cringy and plain bad. Some one-liners especially from Momoa made me shiver in discomfort. To me it felt like James Wan saw Thor: Ragnarok and tried the same approach but much much more poorly executed
-no real story development (or even story). Felt like a videogame where your hero goes from place A to place B fights some dude that noone cares about (Im looking at you Manta), gains his XP and then onto the next scene. Seriously if Manta was not part of the movie it would have made literally no difference. Pretty much like the Joker in Suicide Squad. DC was criticized about it then but here we go again....
-Again regarding the story. There is literally nothing original here that you haven't already seen in every other pop-corn movie before. If this is not your first movie then you can easily predict the lines, the story, the 'plot twists'... Pretty much everything..
-And since we are at the story.. Why was that submarine bombarding Atlantis? As far as we are told noone even believed in Atlantis aside from some people who were considered 'weird' or 'conspiracy theorists' by the general public. So could the government know about Atlantis all along? And its plan was to send a lone submarine some thousand meters undersea for what purpose? Or was it an inside job? Shouldnt we be told or hinted at least? I mean that incident, again from what we are told, initiated the war underseas that would lead to the invasion of the Atlantians against the people of the surface. Either I was half asleep when they explained/implied this or the movie was laughably lazy with this
I could go on but I mostly wanted to share my rough feelings on this especially after seeing how highly this movie is praised at this point. If this was released in the early 00s where the superhero genre was still discovering itself then it would have been fine. But at this point its definitely not.
Honestly if you care only for the visuals go watch it. If you expect anything more do not waste your time.
Personally I think I am officially done with the DCU
Black Panther (2018)
awful story
What reallly took me off was the story. a couple of points:
-new guy noone has seen in his life comes to claim the throne of the most technologically advanced society in an attempt to change the ways of this society. A society that from what we know is prospering and loves their king. Now you would expect people to go against it but in black panther theyre like 'fine lets change everything we know for a guy that we have never seen before and go into war something that we have never done before'. same thing happened in ragnarok but there people were rightfully not ok with it.
-Even when the coup is ongoing for no apparent reason it also stops for no apparent reason. The right hand of warmonger somewhere remembers that his wife is fighting for the opposing side and like that calls the coup off.
-most technologically advanced society having survived some thousand of years and they crown the guy that can win in a brawl. makes sense...
-actors simply did not act. they went from place A to place B to do things.
-who on earth has a palace with no walls when its freezing outside?
overall worst mcu movie i can remember. dont understand the hype
