After watching this, re watching, then pondering, I felt that the drowning girl at the beginning of the film had nothing to do with the rest of the plot. To John, seeing the figure in red was just a reminder to him, and us, of his daughter.
Although the frequency of "red" objects foretold certain events, maybe the psychic was seeing the dwarf instead of Christine in her visions.
And, I like the previous comment about the "Vatican Conspiracy". I can imagine that certain people may not like an Englishman attempting to restore something old and sacred, that was not meant to be touched, remember, John was not very good at what he did.
Anyway, nothing it what it seems in this thriller.
