Not enough budget to pull this off.
1 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
As a die-hard fan of the games I can honestly say they simply just didn't have the budget to pull this off. If you haven't played the game you won't know what I'm talking about here, but feel free to read on. :)

Let me begin by saying it needs to be understood with an adaption like this, they need to meet the fans and general film audiences each half way.

That's essentially a tug-of-war, because 1. The fans who know the actual story are the ones who don't get all the pieces they want in the end. 2. Fans of JUST the first film can't tell that kind of difference, as they like it or not solely based on face value. and 3. Fans of both the film and the game- either like it for what it is, or feel like they were just handed a bone to chew.

The only thing I really truly liked was Adelaide Clemens as Heather. I got to really say she made the film better to sit through and I think her (short-lived) character development at the beginning of the film was quite well done, and I really could relate to the speech she gave in the classroom scene about her own alienation. This character development was really well done for her character. The other characters did not get the same amount of attention.

But as a fan of the games it was seriously the surprising lack of monsters that really hurt the experience for me almost more than anything else did. There is so many incredibly abstract and amazing monsters in the games, it would have been really nice to see them on the big screen. But instead... nope. Just the mascot nurses and P-Head and a few random Hellraiser clones which were completely contrived and uninspired, and frankly nothing like what you fight in the games. There should have been MORE monsters...and LESS "soldiers" with gas masks!

There are moments in this film that make a silent hill fan cringe at the inaccuracies. and moments that build on the original story in an enjoyable but forgettable way. Silent hill games have their own distinct style. Something that was basically thrown out the window in revelation. I think if they were brave enough to replace Pyramidhead with the Valtiel character like it should have been all along (and is in the game) - and if they had a lot more budget, it could have been a lot more faithful to the game itself.

The whole second half of the movie was extremely rushed. and then ended abruptly and in a way that made it look like an episode of a TV show made for teenagers. ugh. The beginning and the potential they crafted earlier in the movie is all but covered up for a quick lousy tie up.

I'm getting off track now. but I think they simply just didn't have the budget to really pull this off at all, and with more monsters (that were from the game) and about 20 more minutes of footage (if done right) I think the whole thing would have come out better for everyone involved.

Therefore, though I appreciate what they got right, and liked how the Heather character was portrayed - As a whole I've got to say SH:R3D is very underwhelming compared to the incredibly amazing game it's based on. If they added more monsters that were actually from the third game, then it would have been better. Also if it was actually scary. Considering they're arguably some of the scariest video games ever made.

Love the games, but I'm afraid I'd rather ignore both the films. I don't hate it, but the games are far superior.
