The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
the weakest of the three
It starts promising with a daring raid on a plane in midflight. and then you are in for a serving of 3 hours of boredom, stupid dialogues, pointless side stories, ridiculous mass scenes and pathetic grandstanding.
At some point it seemed like the movie tried to go for a variation of Citizen Kane, but it failed miserably by only setting up the scenario and showing nothing of the consequences, apart from the laughable mob tribunals.
Oh, and you have to start a war on Iran soon, too, because this movie clearly demonstrates how a nuclear reactor can be turned into a bomb in less than an hour. sheesh ...
Such a disappointment after the excellent second movie ...
Sukai kurora (2008)
The boring life of boring people in a boring war.
Oh boy, this was boring.
Child pilots fighting meaningless battles. If they wouldn't slaughter themselves for the amusement of the population (who don't seem either amused or interested) they are supposed to be immortal - or at least unaging.
The "actors" stalk around like emotionless zombies, which in all fairness was probably by design. Too bad that this causes viewers to develop zero bonds to any protagonist.
Nothing is happening. Ever.
Don't waste your time viewing this movie. I can sum it up perfectly: The philosophical background is the theory that humans don't appreciate peace unless someone is fighting a war somewhere. Thus corporations stage mock battles with real planes and real deaths to satisfy the unconscious demands of humans in a peaceful world. And since humans prefer other people dying to getting killed themselves, they clone child pilots to fight their battles for them, recycling them over and over. This movie shows a small part of the event-less lives of these ambition-less children.
The End.
Sounds interesting? Well, IT'S NOT! But hey, knock yourself out. Slightly more stimulating than counting sheep.
Sicko (2007)
Health Care Lobby voters ...
... apparently managed to secure 20% of "1" voters yet.
Well, there is always the possibility that some hardcore patriots value their hate and fear of socialism more than the fates of their fellow Americans and vote to say so, but i somehow doubt that even the most xenophobe racist fascist embodyment of the American dream embraces companies that get rich on the suffering of their beloved ones.
And even those that disagree with Moore on principle and rightly accuse him of using polemics and the occasional stretched truth can't deny the deep injustice of the so called health care system and they show that by giving them the (what they think) apropriate rating.
After all, there are more aspects than good intentions that make up a good movie.
Hei tai yang 731 (1988)
The hushed up history of the glorious Japanese empire
Japanese relations with it's Asian neighbors are - even nowadays - guarded, although politicians on every side work on establishing normal relationships. Some Japanese however regret that Korean children are still being taught about the 'Japanese devils' in school and young Chinese probably don't look to favorably on them either, although Japanese culture (in the form of Sony and Nintendo) offsets this somewhat racist influence.
When compared to Germany, which managed to kill over 26 million people in WW2 (mostly Russians and about 6 million Jews) the Japanese won the corpse contest by producing over 30 million civilian casualties. Germany, however, is now surrounded by friends, while the Japanese are surrounded by neighbors or outspoken enemies. The fact that they never accepted guilt for the atrocities they committed and never offered an apology might explain this.
And the reason that no victim of Japanese aggression is likely to forgive them can be seen in this movie, where you see a glimpse of what a good imperial Japanese can do to human beings.
For example, the scene where one female prisoner gets her arms amputated in a frost-brand experiment is based upon historic documents and interviews, where prisoners got all limbs removed one by one and the still living head and body were used for biological experiments.
All the butchers got away free, of course, thanks to the valuable data gained by those experiments that the USA got in exchange for immunity.
Unjust world.
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
Big Blunder in the final battle - Joe Wood quality
The movie is pretty nice popcorn cinema like expected with pretty special effects and lots of new shallow characters. However, considering the size of the X-Men universe you can't really fault anyone for not going into detail for each 'major' character available, especially when you expect to see new ones, too.
You can, however, fault the director for starting the final battle in FULL DAYLIGHT and actually fighting it in the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT ! And since no mutant with change-daylight-powers was mentioned, i'm ready to assume that a mutant with destroy-capabilities-for-logic-thinking-powers paid the director a visit.
Chavez: Inside the Coup (2003)
See how the private media spearheads a coup d'etat against a democratically elected president
This is something new.
There's a coup d'etat and a couple of irish documentary filmmakers are right inside of it.
A democratically elected president who uses his power to bring literacy to his people and encourages them to read the constitution is being slandered by the private media openly as dictator, mentally unstable, new hitler, etc. without repercussion from the governments side (like, say, silencing them via bullets and other traditional dictatorial methods). Oh, and they still claim that they are being suppressed, of course.
See how the media gloats about their own role in the coup d'etat on TV after they toppled the government with the help of rouge generals (how much more stupid can you get?? ).
And see how the people of Venezuela march to the palace, holding the constitution in their hands, and reinstall their elected government.
This sounds like a Hollywood fairytale, but it happened for real, against the explicit wishes of the USA. The documentary is a historical masterpiece, shot from the center of the action, acute and totally embarrassing for the prime supporters of the coup: The good, democratic, freedom loving, benevolent USA (who still channel large amounts of money to Chavez' political opponents).
Also highly entertaining and exciting. 10 points.
