30 for 30: The Two Escobars (2010)
Unbiased story
One of the greatest documentaries I have ever seen. I liked the director's unbiased approach to telling this story. The poor people of Colombia didn't love Pablo because he was a drug dealer, they loved him because he was their savior. In the Americas Colombia has the third most number of Blacks behind U.S. and Brazil. In Colombia, just like U.S. and Brazil, the Blacks are predominantly poor and uneducated and governments do nothing but flood ghettos with drugs and welfare systems to barely keep people breathing. Pablo didn't flood the ghettos with drugs, he instead built schools, hospitals, houses and soccer fields. I am not praising Pablo for being a drug dealer, but let's not sit here and pretend that our leaders are not as corrupt as the leaders were in Colombia.
Sankofa (1993)
Spirit of the dead, rise up.
As an African-American male this film really hit home for me. It upsets me that there aren't more films like this from the perspective of the oppressed. I can't believe I didn't hear of this film until recently, the same as I never heard of great Africans and people of African descent like Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop, Dr. John Henrick Clarke, Dr. Amos Wilson, Dr. Chancellor Williams, Dr. Carter G. Woodson and many others like them until recently. This film shows how life today among blacks strongly resembles the life of slaves on the plantation. We think we are free but our minds are stuck in self hatred. I recommend this movie to people of all races and backgrounds, very eye-opening and educational. 10 times better than any Roots or Amistad or Color Purple that was made by people not of African descent
American Gangster (2007)
Are you kidding me!
I don't want to give away anything about the film so I will give you my broad opinion. The anticipation I had for seeing this film was off the charts, and I tell you, that excitement ended about 5 minutes into the film. Ridley Scott delivers something that has the feel of a student film, the acting is mediocre except for Denzel, Josh Brolin and Russel did a decent job oh and Mama Lucas was also believable at times. The dialog is so so, the cinematography was nice, the cuts could have been better. I was never able to get absorbed in the film, it felt so fake and unattached.
I compare this film to the New York Yankees. You have an all star cast and crew, but even with all the talent in the world if someone can't make them bond and become one unit you have a talented ugly mess. I don't see American Gangster getting nominated for any awards what so ever.
