The Foreigner (2017)
One of 2017's best action movies....
I see a lot of movies. Nearly one a week. And "The Foreigner" was one of the most satisfying films of the year for me. This is not the slapstick Jackie Chan we are accustomed to. He is dead (or maybe more accurately, deadly) serious in this one. But for me, the revelation was Pierce Brosnan. I thought it was by far his best acting job ever. The movie has a relatively complex plot and for about the first 3/4's of the movie you think Chan is on the wrong path in trying to track down the terrorists responsible for the death of his daughter. I won't bother to recount the content of the movie. That's already been done in countless reviews here already. But if you are interested in a smart, action filled thriller, you can't go wrong with this movie.
American Assassin (2017)
Disappointed in choice of actor playing Mitch Rapp
I have read all of Vince Flynn's books prior to his untimely death at the age of 47. After that many exposures to Mitch Rapp, who in my opinion is one of the best action characters ever to grace the pages of a book, I figure Vince must have rolled over in his grave at the choice of Dylan O'Brian to play that part. O'Brian is about as far from Mitch Rapp as anybody could be. Don't get me wrong, he did a reasonably good job in the movie BUT HE'S NOT MITCH RAPP.
Overall it's a pretty decent movie. It's entertaining for that type of film. There were a couple of scenes I could have done without. And the transition from one scene to another in a couple of places could have been more seamless.
If they do make any more of Vince's books into a movie, I would hope they could find an actor who fits the Mitch Rapp character better. But with an opening weekend of only $33 million, they probably won't make any more.
A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)
I actually liked it.....
Hey, I didn't go to this movie to compare it to other Die Hards nor was I looking for a film classic or a work of art. I just wanted some good old fashioned action and was not disappointed. The car chase with the resulting mayhem and destruction was over the top entertaining. Each set of crashes outdid the previous one. They must have destroyed 200 vehicles.
I found the scenes at Chernobyl to be extremely interesting even if they were filmed in Bulgaria. The wasteland that they somehow created was very real looking and certainly made me wonder if it actually was filmed at Chernobyl.
Anyway, maybe I am easily entertained. My gf, who is a big action fan enjoyed it as well.
