3 coeurs (2014)
Wonderful film about love, passion, chance
Don't be fooled by the low rating. Totally loved this film. Very realistic. This is not a Hollywood film with a lot of special effects. So if you are looking for a fairy tale, move on to the next film in queue. The cast is absolutely superb - very real life, all very likable. I loved the three main characters played by Benoit, Charlotte and Chiara. It is hard to dictate whom and how to love, how to fall out of love. And the film is about emotional turmoil involved in chance meetings and close-knit triangles. The ending is open to interpretation. And last, but not least, I totally and completely disagree with other reviewers who mentioned that the cast is sub-par (so far from reality). Great film.
What Maisie Knew (2012)
IMDb description is not exactly accurate
The film is not so much about a bitter custody battle, but more about parenting (and step-parenting). Does good parenting mean buying gifts, toys, various gadgets and fighting for custody no matter what? Many people struggle to find a balance between career and family. For some people careers are of utmost importance - that's their #1 passion. For most people their family is what it's all about. And there are also people who are still lost no matter the age- insecure and dysfunctional. The film is about how challenging it is to be around such people, especially if you have to depend on them. THE NEGATIVE of this film is unfortunate use of animal. Animals are not toys. They are living, breathing creatures who feel affection, pain and fear just like we do. It simply does not make any sense to use and promote use of baby animals in a film about responsibility towards kids.
Jenny's Wedding (2015)
A 5 out of 10 type of movie. Minus 2 stars for fur.
The plot behind the film is good, but is a bit too ordinary. At the end of the film the question is - SO what? Something was missing. I am also disappointed to see that the directors and actors are oblivious to extreme animal suffering associated with fur industry. Why use fur for the purpose of entertainment? There is no place on screen for fur trim coats and not only ugly but cruel uggs that Katherine Heigl wore. Do you know that many animals on fur farms are skinned alive, live in deplorable conditions in wire cages, suffer from psychosis brought on by extreme confinement, pain and constant fear. LGBT films are necessary and important, but this one is not one of the best.
The Runner (2015)
Honest film about politics
I highly recommend this film to everyone remotely interested in every day politics. Get an idea of what politicians have to be like if they want be honest vs if they want to be successful. This is not a thriller or a comedy. So if you are looking for something with a lot of digital effects, this is not a good film for you, look for something else. But if you are in the mood for down to earth, honest film, I think you will enjoy this one. Very good acting and directing. Nicolas Cage is great and so is the rest of the cast. The story line is very realistic and does not really evolve around the horrendous BP spill. It is a drama pressures that politicians succumb to.
Smash (2012)
Awesome season 1; Some notes on Season 2
I've now seen every episode of both season 1 and season 2 at least 10 times, probably more. I did not see it on TV for whatever reason. I think I've seen some advert for the show on TV maybe once and forgot about it, so I was not even well aware about the show until I came across it on Amazon Instant video and it already had rave reviews.
What a mesmerizing piece of art, culture, entertainment and just pure simple PLEASURE. It lets you forget about your everyday concerns and immerses you into a totally new bohemian world. The music is phenomenal. In fact it is SO very beautiful that just like others I hope Bombshell will become a real musical on Broadway some time soon. The music, along with the story line that included both love drama and competition, plus the wonderful cast - all contributed to the greatness of the show. I have to also mention that choreography is really nice and if you watch the show more than once, you will notice and enjoy the choreography a LOT! I absolutely loved both Megan and Katharine. Katharine is a novice, but her "newness" is what works so well, she is refreshing and so very real. And her voice,.. oh her voice is just beautiful! You are my star, Katharine! Megan, thank you, Megan, for making Ivy such a memorable, love her and hate her, can't stand her and really feel for her, character, who can sing, dance and act. You rock! I can't imagine anyone better than Jack Davenport for the role of Derek; so charismatic. In fact almost the WHOLE cast was just amazing! Although I am a huge fan of Uma Thurman, somehow in this show I kept picturing someone else for the role of Rebecca; maybe Rebecca was a bit too much for the classy Uma.
After I watched season 1, it took me some time to get adjusted to season 2. The two seasons are totally different. I would say season 1 is a bit more pure. But season 2 is great in its own way. The 2 main negatives I would note about season 2 are the teenage look of some of the new members of the main cast, and sparse choreography in Hitlist. The music is absolutely beautiful again. But it is more on the pop side, so without appropriate choreography, it stops being a Broadway musical and becomes a series of pop songs on stage with a few side dancers. In season one, Bombshell is rehearsed in a studio appropriate for dance rehearsals, where the ensemble is dressed to rehearse. In season two, the ensemble of the new musical wears casual Friday clothes to the rehearsals, so the feel of "there is something special in the works" is being lost. The story of Hitlist is a bit like Harry Potter. I also find that Veronica's character was a bit confusing and maybe unimportant; although I have to say Jennifer's performance of I Can't Let Go is a show stopper; what a great song matched by a great voice! The greatness of Season 2 comes from the wonderful music, the competition between the two shows and the two girls, and from story line in general that allows you to take a peak into the world of Broadway, off Broadway and how the musical shows go from an idea to standing ovations.
I hope there will soon been Season 3, Season 4 and Season 5, all allowing us to peek into the world of theater, musical theater, movie making, song and show writing, awards, and everything that happens behind the scenes. And I hope that Karen, Ivy, Derek, Julia, Tom, and Eileen, along with the rest of their friends, will all be coming back to our lives.
Anna Karenina (2012)
Masterpiece
Anna Karenina is one of the best works of literature ever created. As I get older and reread the book, I find new angles to the story. The book is full of drama and fire, anxiety and despair. How do you fully depict someone's deep emotional distress on screen? This film couldn't have done it any better. This is NOT a usual romantic movie. The style of the film is very different and takes some time to get used to. If you are looking for a regular movie, you may not like this film. But if you are looking for a visually stunning piece of art, with history and drama, if you are ready to dive into people's inner world, you will greatly appreciate and enjoy this film.
