Superman Returns (2006)
Very surprised!
I don't usually get excited about a movie. For me, the last great big screen flick was LOTR. So, when I say Oh.My.God. I definitely mean it.
I went to see it on a whim. I had no expectations what so ever upon entering the theater. I hadn't seen any trailers or listened to any buzz. It was pretty neat seeing a flick without having all of the hype and be let down. Though I doubt I would have been let down at all.
I won't go into any details. But I will say that: 1.) I don't recall breathing during the movie. Not to say that I didn't, just that I had no attention on anything else but the movie, the entire time! 2.) It was 2 1/2 hours? Wow, didn't feel it at all.
3.) I felt like I was 8 all over again. I watched the movie, my mouth ajar throughout. Completely mesmerized.
The movie was well thought out in my opinion, with the exception of only one element of the story line, which I won't really even bother with. There were points brought up that they could have elaborated on and just killed the entire movie. Like the point when Jimmy realizes that Kent is Superman. It's done swiftly with a couple of frames and that is it.
The plane scene just kicked my ass. Very intense. The movie overall was quite intense.
I actually felt for Superman, I nearly cried when he was getting his ass kicked LA thug style.
I bought it. Hook line and sinker. And thankfully it wasn't campy and overdone. I really, really loved this movie.
Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006)
Laugh out loud funny!
I wanted to take my older kids to the movies for some family time. We went and saw Ice Age Meltdown really for lack of something better to see. (Looks like a bad year for movies again- on the bright side, we'll save a couple hundred bucks.) I am pleased to say, I loved this movie. I laughed so much and found it very enjoyable. It was much better than the first one and I don't know if I've EVER said that about a movie. The characters are witty and entertaining and Scrat gets a lot more screen time in his plight for the great acorn. If you liked the first Ice Age then seeing the sequel is completely risk free. A great film for young and old alike. Enjoy! =)
The Hole (2001)
Deeply Disturbing yet utterly predictable - Conatins Spoilers
I accidentally stumbled on this movie while I was cable surfing. I checked out the story line and thought what the heck, here's a movie I haven't seen.
I liked this movie because it unveils itself slowly enough to keep you captivated, yet not too slowly.
The story is about 4 teens who went missing 3 of them found dead. Turns out they had been locked in a WWII bunker for about 10 days. The story is told through the memory of the sole survivor and a mix of current events. We start off believing that Liz's friend Martyn is obsessed with her, trying to teach her a lesson. She asks him to help her out in making Mike one of the victims, fall in love with her. Martyn assists her by hooking her up with the bunker. As Liz "recalls" (she's being video taped by a cop/shrink?) their innocent antics we start to see more of a story develop. As Liz starts to have flashes of what really went down and hallucinations of her dead friends we begin to realize there more than meets the eye. What REALLY happened in the hole becomes the question, not who locked them down there, at this point anyway. Unfortunately I guessed the whodunit waaay too early in the film, but the disturbing elements of it were enough to keep it afloat.
****MAJOR SPOILER*****
Oddly I found I had a tough time sleeping and the movie hung in my mind for a couple of days. This is highly unusual for me. But the psychosis and lack of responsibility by the villain was scary. The fact that Liz could literally watch her "best friend" slowly dehydrate and die and STILL refrain from unlocking the door is maddening. The moments of remorse where she ALMOST unlocks it don't quite fit and the explanations that I've read from other reviews that she's scared don't quite work for me. In the end, you can clearly see, she is about as crazy and calculated as they get.
It is definitely a must see if you like situational/psychological horror. It's what Saw could have been if it had been done by someone who knew what they were doing. Probably should have looked into The Hole's Director and Casting agent.
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Better than I thought it could be
I was very impressed with Shaun of the Dead. It was very cleverly made, focusing on the characters and their interpersonal relationships instead of the whole Zombie situation was really quite unique to "horror". I really haven't seen a movie that made me feel that it was worth my time in quite a while! Now understand that we don't get movies over here in the states with humor such as this on a regular basis. Hopefully American comedy writers will start taking a turn towards more clever humor. I'm so tired of seeing comedy based on vulgarity and rampant stupidity, this was a VERY welcomed change. To all Zombie movie goers and comedy lovers, Shaun is a must see!
