Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995)
Sometimes, something comes along that can not be explained...
The movie was corny, stupid, and funny. But when you get down to it...there is nothing else like it.
As a movie, I would have to say that it was bad. It was simple, and had no real conflict outside of a simple good versus evil. But lets face it, it was charming to say the least.
There is no real explanation for my love for this movie, other then the fact that is was a charming and decent attempt at original children's science fiction.
The movie just had something about it that could not be explained that just appealed to me.
Onegai Teacher (2002)
A great example of originality.
I have been reading plenty of comments on this anime. Everyone likes to bash it for some reason. In reality...this anime is really cute. I enjoyed the character's personality's as well as the events that unfold around them. It also has a story that is unique to say the least. I am a big fan of romantic comedy anime. This one just happens to be my favorite. It has many elements that prove the good and the bad that comes along with falling in love with someone. Kei Kusanagi finds himself charged with protecting the true identity of his homeroom teacher Mizuho Kazami, who also happens to be an alien. After many misunderstandings the two get married to protect Mizuho's secret. Their love follows many trials as the two slowly start to develop feelings for each other. However, their are forces in the universe that work to tear them apart. They have to try and become mature enough to love each other unconditionally.
This is the very first romantic comedy attempt from a manga author who simply goes by the alias, Please. Onegai Teacher is dramatic, funny, and adorable.
It is truly my favorite anime. Its not about the art, its not about the voicework, its just about the true soul it has. Watch it or read the manga to understand how hard the creator worked on it.
Gangureivu (2003)
Gungrave is a wonderful cult anime based off the game of the same name.*SPOILERS*
Gungrave is about two friends in a small gang. When the rest of the gang is murdered, the only two left are Harry Macdowell and Brandon Heat. In an attempt to get away from their past, the two friends join a mafia organization by the name of Millenion. After many many years in Millenion Harry begins to get dangerously ambitious. When he asks Brandon to come with him on his ascension to the head of Millenion Brandon refuses. In his blind ambition he kills Brandon and so begins the rampage of Bloody Harry.
Its now 15 years later and Brandon has been revived through Necrolization to become the ultimate Gun-toting anti hero, Beyond the Grave. Out of the blue, the daughter of Brandon's old love interest Maria appears and reveals the truth of Grave about what happened after he was killed. Now, Beyond the Grave is locked and loaded and ready to dish out some old fashioned justice to Harry and his new violent Millenion. Beyond the Grave is ready to fight and has one mission, the kill Harry Macdowell and his new Millenion.
I love Gungrave. The characters are interesting and the action isn't repetitive (some people might consider this a drawback). The voices are perfect, and the show is simply a successful attempt to interest the players of the games. Gungrave isn't a popular anime, and its less popular a game. This gives it a lot of appeal to me, I don't have to hear about it from the majority of Otakus.
Gungrave is a less popular show from Yasuhiro Nightow and the Madhouse gang ( creators of Trigun ). Although the show isn't as popular as some of the other animes it is just as good with a dark and dreary look. If you loved Trigun and Hellsing and X and (well if you are an otaku) I highly recommend this title.
English dubs are affordable and have four episodes on each disc. You can order the entire series or you can order the entire series, on ebay or the official site, with ONLY Japanese DUBS.
Volume 4 is due on January 18. Be sure to look for it.
