OK, so this show is already catching a ton of flack from fans and it's really not at all justified. Yes, there's changes... if you're looking for a direct film version of the book you're not gonna get it, and if you come down on the show for it... you don't understand cinema.
I mean honestly... can you imagine how painfully dull it would have been to have Richard scout around following Kahlan before intercepting her before the quad found her? Then followed them along before the fight on the cliffs? Then going to Michael's party? It would've been awful! And honestly... people complaining about Deneen's death? Did you really expect a show that airs on Saturday afternoons to include a scene where a character is found RAPED TO DEATH? She got shot with an arrow, deal with it.
So... on to the show. It does have some rewrites but overall it follows the plot of Wizard's First Rule. I'm not going to summarize it as I'm sure you can find plenty of it here. The acting's rather well done and the characters are all very similar to how I pictured them, Kahlan and Zedd especially. Although Chase and Adie deviated sharply from how I'd pictured them in my mind. It has some CG which isn't bad for a daytime show and some really nice effects where Richard and Kahlan are fighting D'Haran troops between the boundary and a forest fire. So why does it only get a six? I'll tell you why....
BECAUSE OF THE DAMN SLOW MOTION! I hate the stuff! Every second move in every fight scene in this show is slowed to a crawl! Why do filmmakers insist on this? It doesn't make fight scenes look good! It makes them awkward and tacky looking, it absolutely wrecked what would have otherwise been a great climactic fight scene! So... that having been said, it's worth a watch. The plot and writing fall short of the books but... consider it for what it is, that is a Saturday afternoon adventure show. So, if you're able to let go of what you think the show SHOULD be and enjoy a pretty cool fantasy show then check it out. If you can't, and that's fine too, then give it a pass and stick with your imagination.
