Dumbo (2019)
Kids loved it
Due to the ratings, I have put off watching this, even though I am a Disney fan. My 8-year-old niece and nephew came to visit, so we cranked it up on Disney Plus. They were enthralled during the entire movie and I also enjoyed it. It was a sweet story with lots of action. Good acting by many marquee stars. We would highly recommend.
High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America (2021)
For fans of "A Chef's Life"
I love anthropology and the culture of food to me is fascinating. This short series did a beautiful job of tracing the culutural lineage of African American cooking. I especially loved the quiet tone of the host and the vibrancy of the cinematography. With only four episodes, though, I feel it failed to further explore Northern influences in the great migration. I would have liked more.
To All the Boys: Always and Forever (2021)
Pandemic?
Certainly set in a different time than my 2020-21 year.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Why?
Why were the 80s depicted so cringy? The first Wonder Woman reboot was so good, but this one was painful to watch. It is sad, because Ms. Gadot is so lovely and Chris Pine is always good. The script, directing and editing were horrible.
The Good Lord Bird (2020)
Reality bites reunion
Imagine my delight to see Steve Zahn and Ethan Hawke in this brilliant pre- Civil War mini-series. These two quintessential 90s actors could only make this show more perfect if they were joined by Winona Ryder and J. Garafolo.
The Straight Story (1999)
Love story to Iows
A former Iowan, I loved how this simple story showed the home state that I love. Simple people, often elderly, with practicality over appearances; strong community bonds: the expansiveness of treeless vistas with oceans of stars and clouds and corn; deer: beer; Ragbrai; and the Catholic Church. The lead actor nailed every stubborn old Iowa man I ever knew. Classic.
Christopher Robin (2018)
Harkening back to childhood
A grownup Christopher Robin is sought out by his childhood friends (real, not imaginary in this version) who want to remind him that the best things come out of doing nothing. My family enjoyed the little quips by Eeyore and Pooh and found it a very sweet family movie.
The Cool Kids (2018)
65?
This is a funny show. I can not lie and say that I didn't laugh out loud, but it was so unrealistic. No one at 64 sees themselves as the retirement community age. They needed to go 10, if not 20 years older, to be believable.
