Happî awâ (2015)
Maybe I wanted to like this
I don't know, maybe I just wanted to like this and so I liked it. The 6 hours long Japanese not so very well know movie...it's an appealing etiquette, no?
But I truly liked. It made me think of a bunch of things first of which is: slow can be fast. If it's deep enough, you have plenty to see.
And this movie is long and slow but it's so filled with authentic human emotions (or what looks like that) I was captured, especially during the first half.
This movie talks about four women more or less and I was the fifth, that's how I felt sometimes. To connect this deeply with some characters, it's kind of amazing.
Subtle, delicate, intimate, nostalgic, melancholic: I don't know if everyone would enjoy this, maybe you could find it frustrating but MAYBE if you just take it in, then you'll like this. Don't rush it, throw away your expectations etc etc. Good luck.
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
For the ones who are considering watching
As you may have understood from the reviews here, either you love this movie or hate it. True, visceral beauty is divisive.
If you love this movie, you don't just love it, you think it's a unique incredible experience.
If you are considering watching Mulholland Drive. In the worst case, you will have wasted a couple hours of your life, in the best you will have watched the best movie ever made, and I believe this second option to be more probable than the first, so I'd say give it a shot.
If you are about to watch it, make yourself a favour because you only have one first time: turn off all notifications, the environment better be dark and most important of all use decent earbuds, audio is 50% in this movie.
One last thing. Quoting from Margin Call: "Be careful", this is a movie like no other.
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
Frustrating nothingness
I am not a regular horror movie watcher. I don't watch horror movies because I don't see the point in watching stuff that will certainly scare you, but not leave something more than that.
However, some great horror movies pleasantly surprised me as they were able to transmit me much more than just cheap thrills. I started watching this movie with the same expectations.
30 minutes in the movie, nothing had happened. The atmosphere during those 30 minutes and overall was always dull and boring. The plot was extremely predictable, almost from the get go. Characters are all frustratingly monodimensional, boring and frustrating, so much so that I could not empathize with any one of them, not even the one who is supposed to be the victim.
There was nothing interesting about this movie. The only thing that kept me watching - I guess - is the photography which was always elegant, and the hope that something would happen.
Nothing did. I just finished watching the movie and I feel as if I watched nothing. Worse than that, that nothingness was filled with frustrating, naive, boring characters.
Too bad, this movie is not my cup of tea.
