Chan sam ying hung (1998)
Better female characters than you'll see in a John Woo film
Other than his good looks and swagger, Leon Lai doesn't have much going for him in this movie. The guy who plays the Wayne Newton/Clark Gable-like character is a better actor.
The movie starts out with a fortune-teller and his altar getting shot. Is it supposed to say something about man determining his own destiny? The female characters are very strong even though they're the gangsters' girlfriends who sacrifice themselves for their men. Fiona did the best acting of anyone in this movie.
I don't understand the plot details and judging from what I've read, other people don't understand it either. The ending's pretty funny.

Lit foh chin che (1995)
Best male, coming-of-age movie
Excellent! I like it better than Saturday Night Fever, Diner, the Outsiders, or any other movie I can think of in that genre. The acting from all of the actors was excellent, except for maybe the girlfriend. I watched it dubbed in Mandarin and the woman who did her voice-over sounded like a Hello Kitty or something. I thought the psychological development of the characters made so much sense. I liked the scene where the camera takes the perspective of a small boy. The performances from the older characters, especially the grandmother's were great. Wow!
Despite similarities to movies like Rocky, this doesn't play out the same way.

Gau yat san diu haap lui (1991)
Campiest HK movie I've ever seen
Saviour of the Soul (1991)
This movie is so campy! It's like a 1960's Batman TV-episode plus melodrama and minus the plot. Both have villains using magenta-colored gas while fighting.
I almost wish it was just a straight comedy because Andy Lau and Anita Mui were better in their comedic roles than they were playing serious characters. The plot was too ridiculous. The one character that I really liked was the younger sister. She was built up and then forgotten.
