Superman (1978)
The birth of something Wonderful
I just watched Superman: The movie for the first time ever. And let me get this out the way first: This is not just a movie. This is an experience. Let me explain.
The first shot in this movie is a kid reading a comic book explaining about the daily planet. From there, the camera zooms out into space, where the opening credits begin. We see Marlon Brando's name, then Gene Hackman's, and then the Superman logo appears. This is accompanied by John William's epic Superman theme that has become such an iconic theme for the character. From here, the movie only gets better.
The story begins on the planet of Krypton, where Jor-El (played by the late Marlon Brando) is sentencing General Zod and his comrades to the Phantom Zone, where they will spend their remaining days in prison. Jor-El believes that the planet will be destroyed in only a matter of days, only the Krypton elders don't believe him. Afraid that they will be destroyed, Jor-El sends his son, Kal-El to the Planet Earth, where he will grow up and show the people of earth the way to the light.
On earth, Kal-El (now called Clark Kent) spends his time being a normal person and attending college. He comes home one day and decides to race his Dad (played by Glenn Ford) to their home, who then collapses and dies due to a weak heart. Clark then decides there must be a reason that he is here for, so he searches for it, which leads him to the fortress of solitude in the arctic. There, a hologram of his dead space father tells him about him and his amazing powers that he will soon get and master. Returning after 12 years, Clark then decides to become Earth's first and most powerful Superhero.
First off, Christopher Reeve is flawless as Superman. He is flawless as Clark Kent as well. He plays Clark as a bumbling reporter, and Superman as a heroic boyscout. EXACTLY how Superman should be. He also looks the part, and is the only actor in the entire world who suits the Superman costume in spandex. Lois Lane is played by Margot Kidder, and she is really good as Lois Lane. Can't really pick a fault with her. Gene Hackman plays Lex Luthor, who is different from the comic book Luthor, but still puts on a great performance. Everyone else also performs their parts exceptionally well.
The script is also very fresh and has some really good lines as well. Lines such as "Easy miss, I've got you" "You've got me, who's got you?", which is also the line that the comics have adopted as the first things that Superman and Lois say to each other.
As far as i am aware, this movie does follow the comics extremely closely. Things like how kryptonite affects Superman, Lois interviewing Superman, Superman's personality, they are all taken directly from the comics as far as i am aware. Krypton's fate is also from the comics, but the look of Krypton is entirely new and original, but i like it, as it is an original way to show Superman's home world.
As with every movie, though, it does have some bad points. For example, the pacing is a bit wired, and makes the film feel a bit too long, and as a result, some scenes feel like they could be better being shorter.
Overall, Superman: The movie is something special. It was the first time that comics were taken seriously, and is an awesome movie by itself as well. It's just a shame that Christopher Reeve is no longer alive today. He will be missed.
9.5/10
Rocky (1976)
My personal favorite movie of all time.
In 1975, an unknown actor by the name of Sylvester Stallone, went to see the boxing match between Muhammad Ali vs Chuck Wepner fight. In this fight, everyone said that Chuck Wepner would last 2, maybe 3 rounds at most. What actually happened was chuck Wepner was knocked out in the last 20 seconds of the 15th and final round, even managing to knock Ali down in the 9th round. Stallone was so impressed and inspired by this, he decided to write a script about a lone underdog who gets a shot at the title. Armed with only $1,000,000 as the budget, Stallone started work on one of the most influential and famous films of all time: Rocky.
The film is about a guy named Rocky Balboa, a down on his luck part time boxer, part time loan shark enforcer. His life isn't really going anywhere and he lives in a grotty apartment in Philadelphia. He spends his time trying to impress Adrian, sister of his friend Paulie. His trainer, Mikey Goldmill has given up on him, due to him thinking that Rocky is a 'Tomato', and not a contender, like other boxers who go to his boxing Gym.
At the same time, the current champion Apollo Creed is set to fight Mac lee green, the top contender. Unfortunately, Mac Lee green breaks his hand while training, and all the other ranked contenders are unavailable to fight. Apollo then come up the idea of, instead of fighting a ranked contender, he will fight an unknown boxer for the chance of the heavyweight title. He then decides to fight Rocky, due to his boxer name of 'The Italian Stallion'. Rocky then takes this opportunity to go the distance, not for glory or respect, but for his own self-respect, to prove to himself that he has what it takes to go 15 rounds with the champion.
Every single thing about this film is flawless. I wouldn't change a single thing about this movie. Here's why: First of all, the acting is spotless. Everyone from Stallone as Rocky, to Carl weathers as Apollo Creed, to even Burgess Meredith as the grouchy Mikey Goldmill. All the actors deliver and then some. There isn't a single actor that is anything less than perfect.
Next, is the script. The script is unbelievably good. There are tons of memorable lines and no badly written lines at all. All the lines have some importance some where, without coming across as preachy, cliché or soppy at all.
Next, you have the pacing. It is without fault. It gives you plenty of story without feeling slow at all. There are also the famous montage, but even though that was in here, the pacing doesn't feel spoiled or ruined in anyway.
The best thing about this movie is how much heart it has. Rocky is just an average guy, who is given the chance of a life time. He doesn't feel like he can do it at all, which is what makes it brilliant. In all other films, the protagonist feels 100% like they can do it, which comes across as predictable. Rocky, however doesn't fall into that trap. Rocky himself is full of doubt, and that makes him realistic. An the fact he accepts the challenge for unselfish reasons makes Rocky Balboa one of the greatest movie characters of all time. The fact that he also doesn't give up during the fight makes him even better.
The fight is also very well done. I find that there is more heart in that 8 and a half minutes than in the entirety of most movies that are released now. The fact that Rocky gets up, even though his trainer tells him not to, just shows how much he won't give up.
I also have to talk about the score. Words cannot describe how good the score is. It's emotional and kicks in that the right time. The Rocky theme in it's self is legendary, and has been used as many times as Rocky has been punched in the entire six movies.
This movie basically kick started Stallone's career as an actor, writer and director, as he would go on to direct 4 of the six Rocky films.
10/10. A true classic.
Pokémon Origins (2013)
Everything the Regular Anime SHOULD be.
Pokémon origins is the name of a special 4 part mini series based on the Pokémon franchise.
But unlike the regular anime that has been going on since 2008, Pokémon Origins follows the original Red and Blue games almost flawlessly, with some changes, which i will explain later.
This 4 part series follows the adventures of Pokémon trainer Red, who goes to many gyms and defeats the gym leaders in order to eventually compete in the Pokémon indigo league. At the beginning, however, Red doesn't have this in mind at all - he just wants to instead complete the Pokédex.
What i found striking about this Special is how the battles are portrayed. They are high speed and intense. It is also brutal in many places.
I also liked how the characters are much more likable than the regular anime. For example, Red i find to be a much better developed character than Ash. Also, Blue is still a character that you despise (that's not a bad thing, you are still supposed to hate him), but he wasn't the type of hate you got from Gary in the regular anime.
The Pokémon, also, don't say their name all the time. They make actual animal like noises, which is a lot less annoying.
Team rocket are here as well, but are actually a organisation, instead of a bunch of 2 bumbling fools and a talking Pokémon (Jesse James and Meowth), there for they are a lot more menacing and are like an actual threat.
The only things wrong with this special are the pacing, the final battle with Blue and the battle with Mewtwo. The pacing is really off at some points, for example, you don't see all the gym battles, at the start of every episode, Red gives a summery of what happened between episodes.
Next complaint is the final battle with Blue. Again, this is to do with the pacing. We only see the final part of the battle in depth. I would prefer it if we saw the whole battle, instead of the final segment only.
The last complaint is with the final battle with Mewtwo. The battle's fine, but they put in a mega evolution from Pokémon x and y. This, although is cool, just feels so out of place in a anime based upon the first generation games, with an inclusion of a element from Generation 6.
Overall, Pokemon origins was brilliant. It is a good tribute to gen 1 of Pokémon, but is bogged down a bit with pacing and story issues.
8.2/10
Wayne's World (1992)
It just might be the greatest motion picture ever made
What can you say about 'Wayne's world'? It is a laugh from start to finish.
The film stars Mike Myers and Dana Carvey as Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar. Two friends who own and run a public access TV show in the basement of Wayne's basement. They spend the time on Wayne's World talking about babes and interview people on the show. Outside of the show, they spend their time going to heavy metal clubs and partying in general.
One day, while recording their latest episode of the show, a sleazy advertiser by the name of Benjamin, played by Rob lowe, sees a potential for a show they could sell to Noah Vanderhoff, played by Brian Doyle-Murray, owner of Noah arcades. They try to persuade Wayne and Garth to do their show professionally, while at the same time take over the show.
Wayne also falls for bass guitarist and lead singer of crucial taunt Cassandra Wong, played by Tia Carrere. Benjamin also tries to take Cassandra away from Wayne, and Wayne has to prevent her from doing this.
Despite having a plot like that, the beauty is not from the story, but from the dialogue and character's interactions. First, Wayne and Garth. These two are irreplaceable, and work flawlessly together. They are by far my favorite on screen duo in any film. The other characters work extremely well together as well.
The dialogue, though, is where this film comes together beautifully. Examples of quotes include: 'Garth, marriage is punishment for shoplifting in some countries'.
The whole film also spoofs famous movies, shows and also advertisements and clichés. one scene involves Wayne and Garth eating food like domino's and wearing Reebok outfits. This is to spoof how films always have pointless and distracting product placement.
As for bad points about this movie, i can't actually think of any. I have seen this 6 times and i still can't think of any. It's that good.
10/10 And by the way, the title of the review is a quote from one of the trailers.
Minecraft (2009)
The greatest video game ever made?
Minecraft is an indie game that was created in 2009 by Swedish game programmer Markus Persson, who minecraft players simply refer to as 'Notch'. His vision was to create a game that gives the player free range. No rules, no goals, just to let the player do whatever they wanted. What he has created is a game that has changed hundreds of people lives forever.
1. Gameplay. This is the most important part of any game. Without good gameplay, the player will just give up playing. Minecraft has some of the best gameplay i have ever seen. Virtually everything in the world is destroyable with the correct tools. The idea of Minecraft is to survive. This means building a shelter and killing animals for food, and avoiding creatures such as creepers and Zombies that actively want to kill you.
2. Controls. The controls of minecraft are tight and responsive. You use the A,S,D,W to move your player around, the mouse to move your camera around, while using the left mouse button to mine, destroy blocks, punch and use tools and weapons, while the right mouse button (ctrl and left click if on a mac) allows you to place blocks down and use the bow. What's brilliant about this, is that you can change the buttons for various actions in the options.
3. Graphics. This is what makes Minecraft so much different from other games. The graphics are entirely made up of blocks. No circles here. The minecraft website allows the player to change the way that their character looks on screen. You can also change the way the game look by using texture packs or resource packs. The game looks very unique and full of character.
4. Life span. Minecraft is known for being extremely addictive. An average Minecraft play for me personally is 3 to 4 hours a day. Other people may feel different, and feel they get bored because of the lack of goals. It's all to do with how you like to play your games.
5. Legacy. Minecraft has won hundreds of rewards, along with game of the year for 3 years. Minecraft is very popular among YouTubers, for it's easy to mod and record. People have even started to make money from Minecraft YouTube videos.
Overall, minecraft is a very good game. It is also a competitor for greatest game ever.
Final score: 10/10
Man of Steel (2013)
The critics couldn't be any more wrong...
I went to see Man of steel yesterday, after waiting months for it, and after seeing it, it didn't disappoint at all.
One thing i liked about it was just how well Henry Cavill pulled the role off. A lot of people have been comparing him to Christopher Reeve's performance of Superman. You don't compare the two, they portray superman very differently. Reeve's performance was a light hearted, boy scout type Superman. Henry Cavill's superman is a more bad ass Superman, who really shows his human side. when he breaks General Zod's neck to stop him from killing an innocent family, not only is that something Christopher reeve's Superman wouldn't dream of doing, you can also sense that he was angry with himself for doing that. That really shows how human he is, even though he is from another planet.
Side characters even do a lot more than in other films. Jor-el, played by Russell Crow, really does quite a bit in this film, instead of him being an ordinary side character who does nothing, he does quite a bit. he has his own fight scene, and even when he dies, his conscience still helps out the other characters.
There is also Lois Lane, played by Amy Adams. she also did a bit more than previous versions. her portrayal reminds me of the way she is portrayed in the superman animated series, a strong, feisty confident reporter who will do anything to get her story, even if it means going to the line of fire, so to speak.
General Zod, played by Michael Shannon, wasn't anything too special. He did his part of a villain. although he wasn't too special, i wouldn't say he was a bad villain, and in no way dd he detract from the film. He had a good motivation, as he was genetically engineered to protect his species at all costs.
The pacing of this movie was weird, but lent it's self towards the feel of the movie i thought. The first 1 hour and 30 minutes was developing the characters, and introducing the major plot details, such as why Kal-el(Superman) was sent to earth, and why General Zod is after him. the last hour, however was action packed. buildings are getting destroyed, cars are blowing up, there is destruction everywhere. superman is getting flown everywhere by the villains, and vice versa. although there is a lot of heavy action, it's nothing like Michael Bay's Transformer trilogy, where you can't tell what was going on. i had an itchy eye, and i could stop watching the movie to scratch my eyelid, then look and i could still understand what was going on.
The whole movie was quite humour-less, just as other Zack Snyder movies, such as 300 and Watchmen. there are little bits and pieces that make you laugh, but the overall movie is very humour-less, which i liked, as this was a serious movie for serious people.
Overall, the movie was fantastic, and much better than anything i have seen in a long time Total: 10/10
