Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014)
Very questionable
The setting of this jack Ryan movie is all wrong, I think. Is this supposed to be a prequel to The Hunt Of the Red October in 1989? If so, then the story should take place in the early 80's, not around 2001 and then progress to present times. If this Jack Ryan is Jack Ryan, Jr, then it can make more sense. Also, no one noticed or heard the flight and shooting inside the super big hotel room? And a supposedly super smart person like Kenneth Branagh did not realise his wallet was picked then returned? The wallet must be at least an inch thick. Taking a walk for 15 minutes gave Jack all the time he needed to run up to Kenneth's office and copy the files? And yes, Keira Knightly's teeth was obnoxious. She should get it fixed. Kevin Costner was actually not to bad, but the same type of character has been played a million times. I especially hate it when one is riding a motorcycle and talk on the cell phone at the same time. If this movie is about The New Spy Game, then it's acceptable. As a Jack Ryan movie, this is barely a C+.
Hon zin (2012)
Crimson Tide. Rings a bell?
Not really a bad HK movie, although the storyline is way out there. A son plans a kidnap and ransom so that his father can become CP?Production and editing are both B+. However, seems disjointed at times. Leung Kar Fai's character is Gene Hackman and Aaron Kwok's character is Denzel Washington in the 1995 US submarine movie Crimson Tide. At the end, Denzel ran out to say goodbye to Gene (leashing his dog). Cold War's ending is similar. Coincidence or not, it's up to the viewer. There seems to be a few too many crime movies taking place at the HK Police HQ. The look and feel of the HQ are too corporate. The lack of the "precinct" feel makes the movie less authentic.
