Shoot 'Em Up (2007)

funny - no; interesting - no; exciting - no; imaginative - no; captivating - no; bollox -yes
9 February 2008
If you have the IQ of a fence-post you'll love this cliché-ridden pile of shite. First brief indubitable adrenaline rush aside Clive Owen is wooden, Monica Bellucci is wallpaper, Paul Giamatti is wasted and little baby Oliver's acting career is stuck in his nappy. Why is Clive Owen paid fortunes to replicate the same character time and time again? Why is Monica Bellucci never given an opportunity to showcase her obvious talents? Paul Giamatti must go home after every day's shooting feeling so good about himself. He has talent, ability, charisma, drive, ambition, charm and determination but he is surrounded by incompetents who denigrate his profession. The director has taken a simple idea, turned it from a 10 minute short into a 90 minute cringe-inducing downhill sprint of a train wreck.

Road movie which develops the friendship of a mafia delivery man and a former boxing champion with a drink problem ...
5 September 2006
Two men form an unlikely partnership in this entertaining and fast moving road movie which hurtles through countries and moves backwards and forwards through time introducing several characters,in addition to the leads, all of whom have their own agenda. Antonio, a mafia employee, is instructed to deliver a car to a team of Russians in Northern Europe. Along the way he meets Carlos, a former champion boxer with a penchant for beer and a love of life. As the journey progresses their trust and friendship grows and the situations they find themselves in increasingly challenge this developing bond. Thoroughly recommended.

life is too short
10 November 2005
Warning: Spoilers
possible spoilers contained

even if the art-house crowd can convince themselves that there is something meritorious in this film i strongly refute it and suggest that life is way too short to sit through 90 minutes of this - the film could have been condensed into a 3 minute short and the same message would have come across - happiness while not guaranteed in arranged marriage is short-lived and ultimately doomed in adultery. the protagonists are uninteresting and under-developed, the long periods of protracted silence merely frustrate and the film's only positive (and it is not much of a redeeming feature) that i can find is the black and white cinematography
