An achievement

I gave this film a "10" for a number of reasons. The foremost being that it manages to be honest, heartfelt and original - in an age that has devalued these very qualities. What a breath of fresh air. That it is the director's first feature is even more amazing. Miranda July deserves all the praise that most surely be coming her way. It's hard to do anything meaningful, doubly hard in today's Walmart America. I sincerely hope that this sort of intelligent and meaningful work succeeds in our crass and mean-spirited culture, we are in dire need of such fare. Lastly, by way of justifying that 10 - it is rare indeed that I can watch something and think "I wouldn't change a thing". Lovely score too. Bravo.

There are films that are great, but by virtue of their intelligence and understatement fall through the cracks - or go on over the years to achieve 'cult' status. Paul Auster's 'Smoke', or Thomas McCarthy's 'The Station Agent' are a couple. This is such a film, and for fans of these types of 'smarter', less 'hollywood' productions there is no greater cinematic experience than finding such a gem. This is unpretentious and real - and ultimately honest and rewarding. Don McKellar has crafted something really special.
