Primer (2004)
Well crafted Indie Feature that won Sundance last year...
I heard a lot about Shane Carruth's Primer, and finally got to see it up here in Minneapolis. It wasn't as exciting as I hoped it would be, but the end of it was great, and the craft for film-making that Carruth displays in his directorial debut is amazing.
Carruth reminds me of a young Kubrick/Lucas, Primer is very Space Odyssey 2001 meets THX 1138. The acting was very bland, a lot on purpose and a lot to make up for not having enough money to hire a great performer. They say the film was made for $8000, but there is a lot of conflicting data on that fact... but still incredible to get a feature length film done for so cheap that has intrigued a pretty big following.
And that's another kinda cool affect of this film, it makes people really love it to the point they will defend it and defend what they think the film is about... and those who hate it because they don't understand. If this was done on purpose than Carruth is a master story teller and I look forward to his future films.
I give this film an 8 out 10
The Mongol King (2005)
Good digital indie film I saw at the SMMASH film festival
I saw this film at the SMMASH Film Festival and for being a digital film shot for less than $8000, at least that's what the reported budget is, it's pretty good. The film is pretty intense because of the great music and the acting was really strong from a bunch of actors I never heard of. I would recommend seeing this film if you like indie films and like films that play fast, it was over before I knew it, which is a good thing. The killer in this film was probably the best character in the entire film, he looks familiar but I don't know what else he has been in. Also the drum playing character is really funny and breaks up this dark crime drama. This is the director's first film and while he's no Quentin Tarantino he definitely has his own unique style, I give this film an 8 overall.
