The Monk (2011)
9/10
Almost a brilliant movie
1 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I liked it very much. Super acting, direction, music, filming. I guess it is the best adaptation of famous Gothic classic (1798) by Matthew Andrew. Love and prohibition of love is an eternal conflict clearly seen in Christianity, especially in middle ages and "era of which hunting". Conflict between the God and Devil? Yes, but it is a late interpretation of much more older conflict between the God (Patriarch) and Goddess, Eternal Mother for whom love and its fruit (new life) is the highest value that can be. I liked the choice of actors. Vincent Cassel is a great actor and very fit for this role. Amazing are both women Déborah François, who embodies the dark psyche of femininity, and Joséphine Japy, who embodies the angelic. The plot of the film and Matthew Andrews' novel do not quite coincide, a lot is missed in the film. Cinema can rarely (or maybe never) equate to literature, but I think here is probably the best screenplay for this work. This film enchants with its great music track, leisurely pace of filming, very suited to the the slow life of the monastery. Lots of beautiful, aesthetically created shots, mystical undertones. The film is psychological, the element of horror is completely unaccented, it naturally follows from the plot. Only the final scene remains unclear, although the crows at the baby's body and the crows at the monk who "sold" the soul, the same body marked by birth with a mystical sign, speaks of fate (or curse) from which it is impossible to escape.

Reign (2013–2017)
9/10
Strong movie
12 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I will write only 2 episode about (1-22 series). In my opinion, it is one of the best historical series I've seen (better are The Tudors, The White Queen). This movie is a little too modern (music and costumes) but the plot really involves, acting is great. The first 1-2 series are maybe the weakest but later You just can't stop watching. It is a pity I didn't find any series devoting to Mary of Scots. Her story and character is the most capturing thing here. But is good to know about her life in the French court. Adelaide Kane plays wonderfully. When she married she was only 16 and is incredibly wise and strong. So I highly recommend this movie for those who like costume dramas.
