Ok, so I haven't finished the show yet, as I just finished episode 4. I will watch the rest tomorrow. The action scenes are quite captivating, and the lack of heroics is a thumbs up. There is tension all the way - and those are basically the positive points.
Otherwise, the series is very frustrating because the motivation of the characters is so unclear. Rose, the main character, is looking for her daughter and she therefore needs to get to the stadium in the city centre. The others are just tagging along for no apparent reason. The other group that we follow are just driving around directionlessly doing idiotic things for the most part.
And that is the weakest part of this TV show. The characters are being outsmarted by zombies and Lord of the Flies-inspired kids continuously, and 100% of all the action is caused by stupidity and a lack of self-preservation. This is doubly annoying because we are told that this is two months into an outbreak-like event where the Government is bombing one zone and evacuating another in a desperate attempt to cull the spread of whatever this is.
Our characters are still trusting the authorities, wanting to go to the stadium along with tens of thousands of other people (presumably), though. Any sane person would go the opposite way, as far away from other people as possible. After all, reports of looting, banditry, killing and general mayhem associated with the humans would certainly accompany the reports of the "virus" turning people into rabid animals when they die... for months now. A global pandemic (presumably). The characters also both show and say this outright. So why, then, go to a place where the concentration of people are at its highest in the area? It makes no sense!
On top of this, nobody picks up weapons to defend themselves, and one character manages to shout "hello!" in an empty street minutes after escaping a zombie. He later picks up an axe and finally takes the fight to the zombie chasing him, only to scream just before plunging the axe into his head - alerting the zombie. The axe also gets tangled up. At that point I hoped the character dies, but he ends up killing the guy who saved him instead. THAT he had the nerve to do!
So, the show has some good action scenes and tension, but the premise is dumb and so are all the characters.
