Love in the Time of Cholera (2007)
A Good Movie Adaptation for Educated Audiences
Like most of the people who enjoyed this movie, I really am not sure where all the bashing came from. I guess American movie audiences just can't handle the wit and charm of a Garcia Marquez adaptation. Personally, I enjoyed the movie. The acting was very good (sans Leguizamo) and the setting and script were spot on as well.. I would have liked to see the inclusion of Rosalba in the movie as I think her friendship provides an interesting balance to Florentino in the novel. Overall, this movie captured the essence and magic of Marquez' novel and also handled the elderly sexual romance in a timely and appropriate way, which is quite a taboo topic here in the states. Overall an enjoyable movie experience, one that makes me see why Garcia Marquez himself approved of the movie.
Obaba (2005)
A Thinkers Movie
Wow, I'm kind of shocked to read so many negative reviews of this movie. Maybe you had to see it in Spain as I did or maybe you have to enjoy movies that make you think. This is not your generic Hollywood-I-understand-everything-within-ten-minutes type of movie. This is a movie that one has to think about and contemplate after it is done and it might take several days to come across what you think the movie was actually trying to say. That, in my opinion, is a sign of a good movie. Obaba is not an actual place, it is a state of mind. Once people understand that, they can see the movie for what it is: an intelligent, beautiful, and mysterious view of northern Spain.
Alexander (2004)
Not worth even renting
Awful, awful movie. Right up there along with Undercover Brother. This movie is destined to be a rental and even then it's nor worth the $1.00 or more. Oliver Stone decided to make the greatest military leader of all-time into a flaming homosexual which had nothing to do with the story. Stone has once again taken a good story and made it into an entire debacle. This movie left out the best parts of Alexander's life (i.e. Gordian Knot) and substituted a three-hour long analyziation of Alexander's sexual orientation. Not even a smoking hot Angelina Jolie can save this travesty of a movie. Save yourself $7+ and 3 hours of your life and bypass this sorrowful excuse of a movie.
