Conan the Barbarian (2011)
A great action flick, not an Oscar contender
I can't help but feel the people rating this movie down were the ones who saw Schwarzenegger's Conan when they were teens and are now judging this without the rose-colored glasses of youth.
I think Jason Momoa does a wonderful job on this style of Conan. While more energetic overall, his interpretation of Conan is very similar to his character of Ronon on Stargate Atlantis. He's a more youthful, brash, and hot-headed Conan than Arnold played and that's fine with me. This movie has no more and no less attention paid to the plot, dialog, and directing than many other action films both better and worse.
I will take this poorly rated Conan reboot over the higher rated Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull any day. This movie was made to have action and entertain and I feel that was accomplished.
XMA: Xtreme Martial Arts (2003)
A good intro to current trends
This is, by no means, a documentary on every fighting style. The focus is on the current state of martial arts tournaments and the growing focus on open/modified forms. The 3-D effects are a nice, general explanation of the workings of some techniques and the scientific angle is interesting, though not as deeply explored as one would be lead to believe. This is not a documentary for those interested in the traditional styles. However, it is an interesting video for those with an interest in the modern, tournament-styled, flashy martial arts. While a little heavy on special effects, this is a nice step in promoting the martial arts without making them seem entirely strict and formal.
