Secrets of Playboy (2022)
Who's responsible?
A very interesting look at different sides of the Hefner story which many times had me asking who is to blame as we naturally look for a victim and perpetrator but it's not that clean cut. In many ways Hef seems like a child, pushing the boundaries to see what is and is not allowed, and he found very few. To me it seems like the social culture then and possibly now is largely to blame. That having money = power and with that power people will say and do almost anything to please you. The mansion was a microcosm, albeit and extreme one, of that social context. It seems like it was an almost self perpetuating situation where the girls were ruthlessly competing against each other and Hugh probably had to do very little for the horrible sounding things to have happened. It sounds like he was an addict for sex and entertainment and there was always a line of people waiting to feed that addiction. I wonder if he felt as trapped and guilty as those girls, hating himself but unable to walk away from the richess, the convenience, the fame until it was just habit and easier than changing to carry on. What do you think?
Clarkson's Farm: Council-ing (2023)
How are councils still a thing??
Absolutely astounding that the way we govern locally is still via a council that no one bothers to vote for except those of retirement age. How is progress ever going to happen when those in charge are vehemently opposed to it. Yes, people could go out and vote, but who wants to be a councillor? Who is there to vote for? Who has the spare time to follow council politics other than retirees and those who strongly dislike enjoyable things? Why is a popularity contest on the most boring topic the means for which we supposedly get effective governance? There must be a better way than this especially by the 2020's. Glad there is some media content out there to show what a joke our "democratic" processes truly are. Supposed to work for the people. All I saw here was people's livelihoods being ruined.
Parks and Recreation: The Debate (2012)
Watching in 2021, its too close for comfort
Feel like I'm watching a trump debate. I think trump modelled his politics off Bobby Newport!
Doctor Who: Demons of the Punjab (2018)
Forgettable
Over a decade has passed since blink, silence in the library, human nature, midnight, the girl in the fire place and most of the last 5 episodes of each season until Moffat took the helm. He did an amazing job as a guest writer for most of the ones I mentioned above and then on balance I really liked what he did with Matt Smith and then there was Capaldi and it became dr Clara with completely forgettable seasons. I was really hoping that with Moffat clearly past his use by and Clara finally gone, with someone new in charge and a new Dr they could get things back on the road or maybe even better (season long story lines?) Instead like many other people have said here it's PC bashing, Earth and history forgettable episodes. Holding out hope that the last 5 episodes of the season will be great like they used to be or that next season is better.
Also have to say 3 companions are too many. Just Ryan or Bradley would be alright but with all of them it's just shallow. Minimal meaninful interaction and development between the Dr and her companions. Need more Rose's and Donna's.
Doctor Who: Listen (2014)
Best in the season but still not quite there
I am a huge fan of the regenerated show, being too young to have watched the old version. I enjoyed Eccleston's portrayal however it did well ending when it did. Tennant was the best in my opinion being the Dr. I first watched and some of those episodes were so captivating, Midnight, Waters of Mars, Satan Pit. Favourite episodes of any series and I've re-watched countless times along with many other episodes from the series such as the impossible astronaut and the time of the Dr. I must admit the first season of Smith, excluding the last two episodes were pretty slow and undramatic. But season 6 boom I was away with Smith. This Dr. i had hoped would not take time to love but it seem's that way. I enjoyed Clara with Smith but now she's become so key to the show it's as though the Dr. is her companion and she is all wise and can't do anything wrong. Pond did it better. I am looking forward to Clara's exit so the doctor and finally stand by himself again. This episode, sorry for taking so long to get here, had such great potential but it lacked the real flare of the previous Doctors and I'm not saying that to fault Capaldi but rather the show, where has all the theme music gone that makes your blood pump because you know the doctor's about to kick ass or save the day. The new opening title is terrible with its clocks and terrible music, the season 5 intro was exceptional and always got you excited for the episode. Somehow without getting shorter this episode seemed to lack the content previous seasons had. It seemed hollow without the doctors kick the seasons past contained.
potential spoilers past here:
It did seem all a bit girly with the whole "some things are better left unexplained" we want the answers. Also it didn't make a whole lot of sense how just because the TARDIS safeguards were off they could suddenly travel to a place that should be time-locked? Or am I wrong there? Overall plentiful in potential, failed to deliver as past seasons have but a good step in the right path for this series, time to knock off Clara and get some classic silly corny back to basics companion the Dr can have some fun with. Thank you
