What Happened to Monday (2017)
Brilliantly relevant
Modern, clever use of hot topics. Incredible range of acting from Rooni to create a solid book of characters. Realistic use of data analytics and data privacy games, well researched and executed. Great story, highly recommend.
Pineapple Express (2008)
Masterclass in Overacting
Once you get past the setup for the buddy movie you wanted, be prepared for the scripted massacre of smoking culture by two of the greatest overactors of all time. Its a caricature of a caricature. Possibly en vogue in the year it was made, aged like an actual pineapple.
Man Down (2013)
Missed it first time around
Ran into this on NF. Absolute joy. Very sad to see Mayal pass on during the production. Two seasons in and almost every episode has made me laugh out loud #realversion. Amazing chemistry of cast, superb rhythm of jokes, one liners, situations, absurd and touching. Some real legends of British sit coms in the mix, suits multiple generations of viewers. Raucous fun.
Altered Carbon (2018)
Very impressed with itself.
Instantly pretentious. Weak script. Very good special effects. Felt like a collection of greatest cliches of scifi. Another case of hype over substance.
Jack Ryan (2018)
so much potential
Tom Clancy is a deft and sophisticated writer, seems a waste to cast someone who cant act into the lead role of this vehicle.
Tomb Raider (2018)
Lot of squeaking, appalling acting
West does his best to inject some compassion into what is otherwise an exhibition of Vikander, quite simply, squeaking a lot. Yes, squeaking. If you are any kind of fan of the original spirit of Lara Croft, prepare to be disappointed.
You Got Served (2004)
Makes you want to move...
This isn't Doctor Zhivago, this isn't even Lord of War. If you came looking for a hard hitting drama about the tough streets of the USA and they use dance to stay alive...pack up and go home now. This is Top Gun, this is House Party, this is FUN. These boys cant act, they cant sing and they cant carry a story but they can dance the bones out of a def beat. There is a primal instinctive beat that lives inside us, the heartbeat, this movie tunes into that and says, "if I had a steady rhythm and all the energy in the world, how could I use my body to show how happy I was?" I think these boys answer the question well, now I haven't see Stomp the Yard but now and again you need to get off your "Movies are like Greek Statues" high horse and learn to dance some freestyle. I am a club dancer and a ballroom dancer and I can recommend this movie to any other true dancers.
Lost (2004)
Opium for the masses
This is a good fun, relatively little swearing and quite comedic series. The characters are strong clichés with a subtle psychological undertone for each plot thread. I don't think its wildly original, just plain old 'bizarre' in a new carrier bag. Lot of metaphors for life thrown in various guises, good ethical and 'how would you make a new civilisation' questions. So far I'm surprised at how little murder and rape there hasn't been?! I guess these are very humane humans...typical Sydney to California commuters...open minded, comforting types. You're OK, I'm OK with a plastic surgeon and a therapist, type of thing.
Its a total drug and had more success than certain Imperialist armies in the shock and awe dept, certainly won a lot more hearts n minds. Its very easy to get sucked into the world of Lost and turn a blind eye to the quite impossibly well kept beard hair that continues to grow perfectly trimmed on all the mens faces. It is as American as Apple Pie but I love it and I need my fix of opium every now and again, keeps things from being too complex out there in the real world.
