Mai Demon (2023)
Blergh not a good one
I have watched 20+ kdramas and I forced myself through 10 episodes of this but I can't do it anymore.
1. Extremely cliche plot, every cliche you can think of, I think I have seen every aspect of this story in another kdrama before, and can predict everything many many episodes before it happens.
2. Lack of chemistry between leads. I'm sure both of these actors are good separately but I don't see any real relationship between these two
3. Annoying male main character who isn't likeable. Arrogant, superficial, silly, what is there to like I don't know.
4. Not funny. I should just avoid Korean rom coms, the humour is very silly and unless that's your thing, just not enjoyable
5. Slow. Definitely feels like there are episodes where nothing happens, and nor do any of the relationships seem to deepen.

Too toxic for me
Started off cute but then it just got more and more toxic... Reminds me weirdly of 50 shades of grey in sense of here is a girl who is with a guy despite not wanting the kind of relationship he is offering.
In this one she says no multiple times and tries to get out of it again and again and he just keeps pushing it. She finds a much nicer guy but then still chooses this dude.
Im fine with it not being sensored like other k dramas, but the toxicity really grosses me out.
Agree with others that the series 100% replies on romance storylines (and at that, sexual ones, not particular sweet or genuine ones) there is literally nothing else happening.
By the end I just felt grossed out by the main male character which I'm sure is not what the directors / writers intended 🤢
The Witcher (2019)
Boring cliche plots with characters you don't care for
Really not much to say about it. I keep trying this series again and again considering it's rating here but my god it's just boring, and all the characters are either annoying, boring or cliche. There isn't even humour to save it. I actually watched the first seasons but each time a new one comes out I've forgotten the first because it was so forgettable. Eventually just couldn't keep watching. And yes I'm including first seasons too. Don't care for any of the characters and don't believe any of the relationships between the characters. I think poor writing is the culprit in this case.........
1899 (2022)
Disappointing sadly
Context:
I loved dark. Love slow burn. Seen 6 episodes of 1899 so far.
This has:
-no change in pace
-no emotional pull for any character
-no variety of emotions
-no surprises
-no variety of sets (pretty much)
-no complex storyline ...
I don't think they should have tried to make a copy of dark (it has many similar themes and tropes).
It feels like rather than the makers of dark having an idea and asking Netflix to fund it, Netflix has come to them and said "can you make something like dark", resulting in no creativity.
If you've seen that meme of what I saw for sale online and what arrived, this feels like that!
The Sandman (2022)
Beautiful and boring
I'm in episode 4 and think I'm going to give up :( slow, nothing exciting about the story line, don't care for any of the characters
I imagine the rating of 8 will drop quickly over the next few weeks.
Beautiful CGI but that doesn't make a good series or film.
Young Royals (2021)
A story about loneliness
I've never rewatched a series in my life but have now somehow seen season 1 three times and 2 twice...
At first glance the series has a veil of superficiality to it. It's high school, it's preppy, it's teenagers. But underneath, there is only gold, and plenty of it. And ironically, it is this same superficiality that is a thin veil around each character.
To me this series is fundamentally about loneliness. If you have ever felt completely alone in the world this could be pretty triggering.
But Wilhelm, August, Sara and Felices stories all reflect the desperate human need for connection. In many cases, they aren't getting this from their family, or from their classmates. In their desperation they'll take whatever they can get, and they'll hurt one another doing it (e.g. Using one another for sex or status). In that sense there is a toxicity in this series, as each character reaches out again and again to another, but everytime fails to be real and to build something genuine.
Perhaps it is against this backdrop of loneliness and disconnect between characters that makes Wilhelm and Simon's relationship so powerful, alongside mind blowing acting from both. Every glance, every half smile, every breath feels painstakingly crafted into this show - either that or these two actors have some serious talents that deserve to be on the world stage.
Every time I finish this series I'm left feeling strangely devastated for days. Another season is absolutely needed but my dream is to see the actors for Wilhelm, Simon and, now after season 2, August, in other series and films.
The Goldfinch (2019)
I loved it personally
I didn't know this was a book, and hadn't read the book before watching this film.
There was a real beauty and fragility about it and I was left thinking about it for a good while after.
I can agree that it may have a few flaws, eg the end was perhaps rushed and didn't have the force it was meant to. eg the main characters trauma and addictions could have been better explored eg it would have been better as a series. I do feel like the story had a lot more to say that they didn't manage to get it across to the audience.
