The Woman (2011)
The first time McKee disappoints me
I've been a fan of Lucky McKee's movies for a long time. I've always liked the fact he has interesting, well-rounded female characters as leads but without the movies being ideological. In all of his movies, there are female and male characters that are well-written and cover all of the "good-bad" spectrum. However, I think this is the first time one of his movies feels propagandist to me. In this one, all of the males are "bad-bad-bad" and the females are "victims-victims-victims." The male characters are simply bad, with no real depth, and all negative qualities are hoarded by them, while the women are all good, poor "victims of the evil patriarchy." If you are an extremist feminist then you'll love this movie; otherwise, you'll be better off watching some of his other movies, like The Woods or May.
