The Wee Man (2013)
4/10
Disjointed, and poor dialogue ruin a good story.
22 February 2015
British cinema has not been at its best in recent years. All of our most brilliant story tellers go to Hollywood. The story here is good. Compelling even. The main characters journey from scared boy to prolific gangster is a decent enough. Rather than being a bad story done well, this is a good story done badly. The writing isn't great, although the acting is for the most part decent. The film fails because the narrative is massively disjointed, which is a shame because the production values seem quite high and if a little more care had been taking in 'how' to tell this good story then it would have been a decent film. Watch if you have nothing better to do.

Longmire (2012–2017)
9/10
Much better than it sounds.

Don't be put off by your first impressions... judging by the poster, title and description, I was expecting this to be dreary and dull. It wasn't! If you like 'Justified' then you will really like this.

Like most detective shows, 'Longmire' is a 'crime-of-the-week' - 'who-done-it', but unlike a lot of those types of shows, the acting is first class and so too is the writing. It isn't written to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

It is not full of gun fights and car chases. It does not try to be sexy or glossy. This is not CSI Montana - it is something a bit new and a bit different, and it is very refreshing. Give it a go.

Ray Donovan (2013–2020)
7/10
Good characters, but all over the place.
13 July 2013
'Ray Donovan' has all the ingredients to be a fairly good show, but it feels like they tried to throw too much in to the pilot... you are left dizzy by the end. The structure of the show is a little strange too - the plot seems to drift around, you are given lots of half stories and it all feels a bit vague.

Having said that, the acting is brilliant and the characters, for the most part, are engaging. The writing is solid - not Sopranos solid - but decent enough. The premise of the show is good too... it feels as though there is a great story in there somewhere, but they just haven't figured out how to feed it to us.

I am sure the show will get stronger as the season progresses.

Orange Is the New Black (2013–2019)
9/10
Hilarious and dark.
13 July 2013
This show is a seriously funny drama.

If you like 'Weeds', 'Breaking Bad' or prefer your humour on the darker side, then give it a go... you will not be disappointed.

Very few people create characters like Jenji Kohan... and it is the characters that make this show. Like 'Weeds', 'Orange' is fresh and original, and like 'Weeds' the lead character is tragically flawed and hilariously funny.

Well done to Netflix on their latest production... 'Hemlock Grove' is just weird, 'House of Cards' was hit and miss... but it looks like the third time is a charm. Bravo.

(FYI: humour is how we Brits spell humor). :-)
