La casa loca (2007)
Horror!!!
Horror! A word that's the same in English and Spanish. So accurate on this movie!
Oh my God, oh my God. Who did this? And most importantly, WHY? Last night I thought I'd take a look at some Latino movie production and came across this piece of... "film" (video).
A comedy about NY Latinos in College? Could sound nice, but certainly not this way. Not when the script is just terrible. Not when the actors are so amateurish. And definitely not when all the other important aspects are simply non-existent. Who edited this that even conversations are badly done? Where was the director. Believe me, this movie is so bad it even SOUNDS horribly. Oh my God, to think they keep saying things like "today anyone can grab a home camera and make a movie". If this is the result, please don't!
The Quest (2006)
Truly Awful
Mislead by the terrible lie on the cover, "fun as American Pie", my girlfriend and I sat in front of the TV waiting for a comedy... and this is definitely not one. You probably won't laugh one time if you're not one of those Jackass-like ever-teeny minds. It's not even an erotic movie, which would at least been something, given that it's about sex...
So, what is this? The erratic plot deals with a guy who wants to lose virginity (zero in originality, I remember "Losing it" for one) and his gang of friends. The rest of the characters (i.e. the girls) just come and go for no credible reason. Come on, there are even Dwarfs (so simple: "dwarves are fun ho ho"...) The acting is very TV-like (as is the video look throughout the movie) and definitely amateur in the case of most of the girls...
Awful movie. Amateurish, badly produced, and over all NOT FUNNY. Kids and teens will love to watch it with friends because of the swearing and sex jokes. Other than that, don't even think of renting this movie.
La playa de los galgos (2002)
Booooring!
So, this is how "intelligent" movies are made?
You get some good characters: a terrorist on the run, his always-so-nice brother, and his girlfriend without past.
Your get a story that's clearly a THRILLER. It has a good guy who, while having an affair with a mysterious woman, looks for his brother all through Europe; suddenly, when he succeeds, his girlfriend kills the terrorist in cold blood! Shock!! We find put she only was with the good guy to seek revenge on the terrorist! But she will pay her crime, too. There you are, the moral of it all: terrorism and violence don't pay.
With that, any other director would have made your average action movie. With a nice story twist at the end, a hero, a gorgeous actress, and definitely good action scenes.
BUT. Mario Camus makes "intelligent" movies, as was "proved" in boring long movies as "El pájaro de la felicidad". So he gets the thriller, adds LONG pointless dialogs, adds some LONG scenes with no dialogs, adds some LONG useless by-stories to the idea, adds badly dubbed actors, adds music that's terribly mimed and then adds more LONG scenes and LONG dialogs. And in case the result is not long enough, he manages to get the film duration to 2 hours 7 minutes!! One feels both BORED and UPSET. Come on, he is the director who signed such a MASTERPIECE as "Los santos inocentes", he certainly knows how to make a good one! So why does he feel the urge, every now or then, to punish us with movies like this?
Di que sà (2004)
Not worth it
Terrible movie, absolutely awful! With a script that's just plain stupid and a clueless directing, the whole point of the film is silly. The characters are flaw, stereotyped and predictable; they act and evolve for no justified reason. Under these circumstances, even the good work put up by Paz Vega -great as usual in a character not so far from her usual roles- can't avoid the sinking of the ship. On the contrary, her partner Santi Millán becomes as clueless as the director; and it's even painful to watch a good slapstick comedian as Pepe Viyuela in such a stupid character. Mix all that in a story filled in with product placement and obnoxious commercials, and what do you get? 2/10, being generous. A comedy without even a good joke during all the movie? Definitely one NOT worth watching.
La guerra de papá (1977)
A great allegoric movie
Don't be misled by the low ratings: this is a movie to enjoy. The fantastic novel by Delibes gets turned here into a well-developed script with an especially terrific dialog work. A social allegory from the beginning to the end. Through the eyes of a "unthrowned prince", a 3-year-old boy, the movie portraits the dull pain of a whole society in change: the outdated family model, the new challenges against the old traditions, the nonsense of Franco's war-obsessed Spain, the fear of future changes and the muted discomfort and tension between all social classes. Even the innocence of a child is finally seen in disbelief, letting the viewer share the pain of an uncertain world. Great script, good acting (GREAT in the case of the incredible child actor Lolo GarcÃa and the very young Verónica Forqué). A movie that portraits an era in Spain's history, a perfect document to any student of our "transition" to democracy.
