The Boys (2019– )
Series 2 was just as strong as Series 1...
10 October 2020
A refreshing change to the usual superhero offerings. Those who say Series 2 is a disappointment are talking out of their behinds. I think they may have hurt feelings because of the political parallels thrown in there, along side the dark humour. Instead, concentrate on the strong character development and the age old story of good overcoming evil, but at a price. One of the best recent TV shows out there.

Forget Marvel's Movie Thor for a bit...

Warning: Spoilers
Absolutely wonderful. Didn't know what to expect and was blown away. Forget Marvel's movie Thor for a bit. This was really reminiscent of the early Marvel Thor comics I grew up loving and reading. It had the same feel. Loved it.

A success

My favourite DC adaption. Well cast and well crafted. A wonderful timeless feel with a an eighties movie tone. It's also not afraid to get a little dark. Bring on more.

Very good.

I honestly don't get the reviews on here. Maybe they have some sort of agenda that I have no interest in. Yes it's violent. Maybe It's controversial for some. Don't watch it then. For me, it's well written, well acted and satisfying. I like to see evil Nazis get their just desserts, be it Indiana Jones or be it the Dirty Dozen, with just a few laughs thrown in to lighten the horror for a minute, and this does just that.

I liked the horse...

I rate Guy Pearce. I didn't rate this movie. The best scene was the horse's face when Guy kissed his ex-stripper co-star. However, I have no doubt that Guy will be back with more quality parts, like his role in the BBC's new adaptation of 'A Christmas Carol'.

Reindeer Grinding Good...

I'd been looking forward to this since seeing the trailer and was not disappointed. As an ageing metalhead that grew up in bands, this movie brought it all back to me while making me laugh, cry and cringe. The memories of trying to create original music, trying to come up with band names that don't weather too well, dealing with the people that 'didn't get it', the dream of breaking out of a small town and being taken seriously, making it big and the adventure along the way. It's a film about overcoming self doubt, criticism and believing in your talent, the music and your friends. I haven't seen many Finnish comedies but the humour translated really well and the characters were loveable and well defined, each having their own believable traits - they reminded me of people I used to know. An altogether heartwarming tale, with clever references to the scene, while appealing to everyone (even if you have never been into metal) with some hilarious moments along the way.

I expected Porterloo but was relieved...

An interesting look at a little portrayed period of English history. Yes, the climax is harrowing, as it should be, but the lead up to it is engaging, using a series of interesting characters, back stories and even a little humour. The sets and costumes are accurate and they've been true to the accents, giving it an overall realistic feel and giving us an intriguing window into the period. I do like a historical drama and I would say that this delivers, contrasting Waterloo against the the terrible event to come, class against class and friend against friend. Some people have commented that it's a little too long but it didn't feel that way to me. There were some great scenes and dialogue woven into the story, such as the individual courtroom tales, giving a taste of just how harsh the period was and how badly the working class were treated, as well as the polar opposite Prince Regent frames, all of which are tinged with humour and just the right amount of the dramatic character acting along the way. Overall, I'd say it's a well done, atmospheric portrayal of the period and events, with a really good cast. Entertaining and educational.

Brilliant...

I love a mocumentary style comedy. I also love Vampire movies. I was hoping that this would be well done. I should never have doubted. It's almost perfect. The character studies are almost genius. The backstories. The nuances. The sets. And it's hilarious. Brilliant.

Make up your own mind (especially if you're a Sherlock Holmes fan)...
31 March 2019
To think that I almost gave this movie a wide berth due to being a Sherlock Holmes aficionado and the unfavourable reviews. It was much better than anticipated. The sets, locations, wardrobe and nods to Holmesian London we're skilfully done and a pleasure to look at. It also has a good supporting cast. I had fully expected to cringe at the script and the humour but not so! It has been done in the style of classic silly British comedy with a few current references thrown in, incorporating convenient characters from the period along the way. I understand that comedy is personal but I don't understand the ridiculously poor reviews. I can only think that some of the subject matter is a little uncomfortable for some. But that's comedy. If you like anything Holmes related, comedy in a 'Carry On', 'Monty Python' or 'Young Frankenstein' vein, there's no reason why you shouldn't enjoy this.
