The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Dissapointment of the year
Very rarely do I write a review about a movie, but the high 7.1 rating (at time of review) compared to what I just spent two hours of my life on warrants a warning to anyone expecting a good mystery/thriller, which is by far my favorite genre.
This is an art film for all intents and purposes. It is intentionally slow, acting is intentionally wooden (void of any emotion) and intentionally weird.
Now, I don't mind weird movies, but this is the completely traditional artsy weird-for-the-sake of weird. It doesn't aid the plot, and most of the weirdness could've been removed and the plot would not be changed in any meaningful way.
Speaking of which, the plot is completely transparent from the start, and full of glaring holes, which aren't even attempted to be explained or excused. It is trivial to see where it is going, removing any hint of mystery from the movie itself.
Every character acts irrationally and without emotion, leaving me not caring about or connecting with any character in the movie.
The only mystery here is how it can achieve its high rating and how the director keeps getting funded.
The only positive I have to say is that it is slightly less artsy and dull than The Lobster.
I suppose if you either consider yourself smarter than the peons who don't understand movies like this or you're a flagellant, this is the movie for you.
Cell (2016)
Good movie ruined by loose ends
I really, really loved this movie. At least up until the end.
It starts out as a mystery/zombie movie. Everyone's gone crazy, and the hero's family needs saving.
There are plenty of points of interest which could have made for an excellent movie. Who created the signal? Who is the man in red? Why did the protagonist predict the events through his comics.
None of these are answered. The ending is even worse. Never have I watched a movie spoiled in such a way that I simply choose to disregard the last 15 minutes and make up my own ending.
This movie has so much potential. The main character could be dying and the whole story is his conscience over not seeing his son playing out. The antagonist could actually mean something to the plot.
This movie seems like Stephen King wrote the first 70 minutes, then M. Night Shyamalan took over the rest, and King forgot to mention the loose ends he should probably tie up before ending it.
The Hungover Games (2014)
Yet another spoof movie done poorly
The Hungover Games takes the known and loved characters from The Hangover and places them in a world similar to The Hunger Games. In the process, it attempts to criticize Hollywood for a lack of originality. This is perhaps the only funny joke in the movie, seeing as it is itself completely without original thought.
It doesn't make fun of the Hungover characters, it just copies them and reenacts their mannerisms in the Hunger Games world. In the process, it also includes various other token characters from pop culture. However, these tertiary characters are fitted with poorly done costumes and for the most part equally poor actors.
I must however admit, that many of the actors in the movie are above average for the genre. The story and whole setup is extremely lazy however. I have a hard time imagining anyone being particularly proud of this movie.
The movie leaves a lot to be desired, but I suppose it could be watched during a severe case of hangover.
Zeitgeist (2007)
This is not a documentary
First of all, I will commend the author of this power-point presentation for his technique. It is a fast moving documentary, revealing the true nature of religion, terrorism and federal banking. During this 2 hour piece, proof is presented that Christianity is basically just another clone of every other religion out there, that 9/11 was an inside job, that income tax is unconstitutional, and that Pearl Harbor was provoked intentionally by America. These revelations would have made this the single greatest documentary ever made, if it were not for one minor flaw: it is all complete and utterly fabricated.
After watching the movie and doing (surprisingly little) research, it becomes evident that roughly 90% of the arguments presented as fact in this 'documentary' are completely made up. I won't present any examples here, but several sites already exist that debunk the entire film.
Now, the falsehoods in this film are so blatant and severe that they cannot be the product of an under researched script - they have to be made with the intent of misleading the audience.
Frankly, I am amazed that tinfoil hats can be made with sufficient thickness that people can actually believe this. I would previously have thought that such an amount of aluminum foil would have snapped the neck of whoever attempted to wear such a hat.
So in that respect, I suppose I learned something by watching this movie.
In summary, watch this movie if: A) You *know* that 9/11 was an inside job and you want someone to agree with you. B) You process critical thinking and you need a good example of what can be done with clever editing and complete disregard for facts.
In either case, you may have a good time. But if you find that you have changed your mind about anything after watching this movie, I beg that you read both sides of the argument.
However, since this documentary so obviously has an agenda, I cannot with good conscience good it a good rating. But I would say it is definitely in the 'so bad it's good' category.
