Amistad (1997)
Feel the true meaning of freedom......... the Spielberg way!!!
Another masterpiece by Spielberg, which is a testimony of Spielberg being the greatest story teller of Modern cinema! A movie which is a stand-out classic on it's own, not only because of the sensible handling of a real life incident but also for the way the story is executed without rubbing the concerned parties the wrong way! After the first 20 or so minutes the movie takes off and i'll bet you won't even take your eyes off the monitor for a split second, because you your soul will be engaged with the proceedings and you would be imagining yourself there with THEM and trying to help out THEM. Certain sequences are shot in typical Spielberg style and you have to watch it for yourself and perceive what is FREEDOM - a pulsating Dialogue from the best sequence in the movie (in my honest opinion!) The language barrier between the two parties and how they try to overcome it, how ultimately justice prevails above any other personal gains etc are other examples of not only how brilliant a story teller Spielberg is, but also Spielberg's keen eye for detail and the accomplished technician in him, the camera angles just elevates the mood to an altogether another level! Watch the movie and you'll know what is FREEDOM!!!
Onaayum Aattukkuttiyum (2013)
OMG! what a movie and .......... just 11 reviews???
I'm writing this review with shear anger and disappointment! A movie if it was made in Hollywood, would be preserved and the script would be under the scrutiny of the best minds in prestigious universities! But the movie (The Masterpiece) is not getting the Reward And the award it deserves, not even from the natives! Getting to the story, it is not a story that could be translated into such a masterpiece by every Tom, Dick & Harry, Not only the story but the narration is path breaking to say the least! It is about how far one will go to suppress the animal instinct in him and how far a "Refurbished" human would go to remain human! this is the simple one liner and the rest you have to see to believe it! Out of the top 10 clichés (AB)used in Indian cinema flashback sequences takes the cake but in this masterpiece The Director MYSSKIN has given a fresh treatment to the flashback sequence making it effective and impact full! No words to describe the BGM of Ilayaraja and this soundtrack proves why he is the RAJA! A movie for all and a movie (masterpiece) that should be appreciated as well as endorsed by every sensible movie buff!
Lucia (2013)
India's Answer to INCEPTION!
Oh my god what a movie! and Why don't these movies come into the mainstream cinema? and if i'm correct this is the first film to be "crowd funded" in India. The script is an exceptional one and the way it is executed takes the cake! This is such a technically brilliant movie in more than one dimension; not only Editing, choreography, BGM etc.. but also the story telling is just mind blowing and the treatment of the script is fresh as a blooming flower! Although there is a clear difference between the two parallel story lines as one part is in black & white, but still the way the script is executed you should have the thinking cap on your head firmly! Last but the not least this movie would invariably become a cult classic and miss this film at your own risk because invariably there will be so many clones spewed out in the near future but it would require a touch of genius as well as madness to repeat this kind of brilliance!
Aaranya Kaandam (2010)
What a movie ......... Miss at your own risk! - and i mean it
I stopped short of giving this movie a 10/10 rating solely because of it's somewhat glorified portrayal of violence, other than that this is one heck of a movie which should have ideally been a milestone in modern Tamil cinema but fell short of achieving that landmark solely because it didn't have 1. Big stars in the movie 2. Big production house 3. Promotions (This movie virtually had no promotions at all) 4. Big technical Crew (Apart from Yuvan Shankar Raja of course)
Here by BIG i imply established popular personnel. This movie had excellent technical values compared to the garbage dished out in the name of commercial cinema every other day and you have to see the movie for yourself to believe what a movie you have missed. The techniques used by the director to portray certain intense situations, the way the characterization is done, the way the movie is kept moving at a break-neck speed, The way the director makes us anticipate even clichéd scenes by smart editing techniques and many more should be watched by yourself to believe it and appraise the excellence! People should endorse such HONEST and INTELLIGENT attempts so that others too would come out and try new things or at least director Thiagarajan Kumararaja would come up with a new project (as of now he is not committed to any new project even after crafting a masterpiece like Aaranya Kaandam!).
Rush (2013)
The greatest Biopic I've seen!
went to the theaters without any great expectations but i was in for a pleasant surprise. I would rate this movie as the best of 2013 as it had great performances as well as a deft screenplay. This is one movie that didn't depend on any gimmicks but solely on content. The way the relationship between James Hunt and Niki Lauda is portrayed in such a beautiful and intelligent way that after the movie ends you won't be able to take sides on who you would support from the two champion drivers. The mutual respect both have for themselves ( Although being fierce rivals on the track) is portrayed in a subtle and believable way. In my point of view the only hero is the director and boy what a hero he is!
Satyagraha (2013)
Could Have been better!
Good performances by Amithab Bachchan and Ajay Devgan was spoiled by a lagging screen play. The linear narration technique ( Director Prakash Jha's preferred method) spoils the ultimate impact of a story which could have been more powerful and wide reaching with he additional advantage of the performances of two proved performers. In my honest opinion Arjun Rampal was under utilized. The movie overall starts with a bang but fails to sustain the pace. On the positive side the movie depicts the political games played not only by politicians but businessman as well. Also how the present generation's opinion could be changed by the use of social media and the knee jerk reaction without verifying the facts and how issues are sensationalized are depicted vividly as well as sometimes subtly by the director. My conclusion is that in dealing this particular subject the Director had the vision but lacked the conviction and ultimately the movie fell flat on it's face!
Nayakan (1987)
Inspired from GODFATHER ........ Not copied!
I would rate this movie as a glowing example of the essence being inspired but the setup, execution and the ultimate product being original. people argue that the look of older Kamal's make-up being similar to that of Marlon Brando, the way Kamal cries when his son is killed is similar to the performance of Marlon Brando etc.. But no one can argue the fact that the scene build up and the way the story was setup was not lifted from the God Father, there are so many movies that are copied scene by scene (as a matter of fact the Hindi film Dayavan was a scene to scene copy of Nayakan but failed miserably!) but here the genius called Mani Ratnam has adopted the basic storyline and Indianized and made a masterpiece around a character (co-incidentally resembled much to the local Dharavi don Varadha Bhai) which was immortalized by Padmashree Dr. Kamal Haasan. A must watch for anyone who has an eye for meaningful entertainers with the best technicians in the industry at rollicking form firing all cylinders from Mani Ratnam, Kamal Haasan to Thotta Tharani, Ilaiyaraja, P.C Sreeram etc.
Sivaji (2007)
A rajini buffet!
If you want to see a Negro RAJINI, a Caucasian RAJINI, RAJINI performing daredevil stunts, RAJINI performing slapstick comedy, breath taking dance moves by RAJINI, an Emotional RAJINI, the philanthropist RAJINI, The Stylish RAJINI, The "Villain" RAJINI and finally the ultimate mass hero, the super star RAJINI - This is the movie for you. Rajini being chiseled by director shankar who has packaged whole of the above ingredients into a wafer thin plot and made a wholesome entertainer that leaves you yearning for more of the one and only RAJINI diet. A must watch for those who require a stress buster after a hard grind and a decent entertainer for those who seek time pass, an entertainer which requires you to keep your brain safe in a locker and just play the DVD, sit in front of the monitor and ENJOY!!!!!!
Nagaraja Cholan MA, MLA. (2013)
Dirty politics exposed by witty dialogues
Compared to the previous works of the Manivannan-sathyaraj duo this films leaves a lot to be desired but still quite enjoyable in patches. the dialogues by itself could've been released separately as an audio track. The main drawback is the script as the character of sathyaraj is made so powerful but there is no one to take him on which leaves a sour taste as sathyaraj scores one side goals throughout the movie all though there is a twist in the climax it was too late! The chemistry between manivannan and sathyaraj on screen should be seen to be believed, accompanied by astute dialogues this political had greater potential to be a landmark movie in the lines of it's predecessor Amaidhi Padai but the weak characterization of the support cast and an average script foiled a potential classic. Watch for the witty dialogues and the magnetism exuded by the "Villain" Sathyaraj!
Exam (2009)
A riveting thriller that picks up slow but completely blows you off!
how far will you go to pass in an exam so that you'll be recruited to a firm whose worst-paid employee is paid better than the best-paid employee in other companies! The basic outline of the plot is that how different characters would react under intense stress conditions and keep their cool(if possible) to answer the ONE AND ONLY QUESTION of the exam! What is the question and whether it is easy or hard, how the candidates will answer the question is to be seen on screen (DVD) to get the real feel of the movie. It picks up slowly but shifts gears midway and travels at breakneck speed taking you through a mind blowing ride that will stay on with you for some time. A must watch for thriller fans but sit through the first half an hour and by then you wouldn't regret!~
Catch Me If You Can (2002)
An emotional thriller!
The title of the movie may suggest a cat and mouse game between two individuals, but there is more to it! This a movie that portrays the relationship between a young boy who yearns for parental love & care and a middle aged police officer who is away from his child. Although the basic plot is the conflict between a young, brilliant con man and a cool & composed police officer, the emotional struggle both of them endure as a result of their troubled relationships with their respective families is beautifully woven around the plot by the virtuoso STEVEN SPIELBERG! The movie is highly recommended for mass (who prefer thrills) as well class (who embrace meaningful cinema) audience!
Grandmaster (2012)
Mohanlal show all the way!
If you want to know the meaning of screen presence, just watch this movie. A technically brilliant movie and a commercial script, executed to near perfection, it is all about Mohanlal. Man he just eats up others and he is all over the screen, such dominance and screen presence, this is what real charisma!!! No one other than Mohanlal could have pulled the role of a middle-aged cop who is returning to duty with such élan and magnetism! The riveting climax and decent contribution from the support cast drives the movie home, definitely a must watch for crime thriller lovers and Lalettan fans! A one time worth watching movie that wouldn't disappoint you!
Baasha (1995)
A movie that transformed a popular film actor into a political tsunami
A movie that gave a new definition for Character Underplay and subsequent Stylish (violent) transformation for the tamil movie goers. Tops the must watch list of all thalaivar fans and more than a decent entertainer for anyone who prefer an intense story said with a commercial sugar coating. This is the movie that exploited the brand RAJINI to the maximum and expanded his reach among maases to unimaginable proportions thus making RAJINI the undisputed MASS HERO! The movie is not only stylish but has substance too and a trend-setter for future gangster flicks! But unfortunately none could match the magic of the one and only BASHA, nehi nehi maanik BASHA!!!! A complete RAJINI entertainer all the way!
12 Angry Men (1957)
A movie that would make you Conscious on how the observation is subjective to the observer!!!!
A setting that had all the things that would bore anyone to death; 1. Characters : Just 12 2. Location(s) : Inside a room 3. Stunts : No 4. Comedy : No 5. Romance : No 6. Graphics : No 7. Superstars : Strictly No
With all the deficiencies mentioned above, the moment you play the movie you'll completely get hooked to the movie that you'll even forget your popcorn! There is an under current social commentary which depicts how people of different social strata look at a thing/incident subjective to their social, professional background. The way people would react to an incident based on their own experience. And ultimately the rationale individual who tries to see through the things based on pure judgement than being emotionally restricted! A must watch entertainer for all types of movie goers!
