You Were My Friend (2016 Video)

Effective Little Short
24 August 2016
I recently watched You Were My Friend on YouTube, and was surprised as to how good it was for the small budget and time constraints it has. The short pays homage to the 2012 film VHS no doubt with a similar style and ideas, and it definitely fits the tone. The performances are all very realistic and good, with standouts being Aidan Taylor and Nathan Crook. With them being a part of the center piece of the story, which might I add, is very clever and above all, scary! The editing and directing too was very well done. I cannot find much flaws with it, it did its job to its full potential, and I cannot wait for a potential follow up! I would definitely watch this again, and do recommend it!

Shin Godzilla (2016)

Good Monster Flick
11 August 2016
I saw this movie at an advanced screening with no subtitles, which will not have any effect on my review as you can pick up on the dialogue even without subtitles. Godzilla. By far the best part was Godzilla (Despite having little screen-time), his design was creepy and paid massive homage to the original. His powers and tricks were updated to make it feel fresh. There just wasn't enough of him in the movie to get me to love the film. The movie has a very bogged down feel to it, which is the fault of the writers. It feels very claustrophobic due to 70% of the film being inside a room or building (That really got to me). Also the acting was very sub-par and didn't feel real or even comical. It also ends very... strangely is how I'll put it. I had fun with this movie and I'd see it again for the Godzilla scenes. If you're a G fan then go see it, if not then don't bother. 6/10

Equals Three (2009–2016)

What happened?
13 April 2016
First of all, I was a humongous fan of this show, having been a long time viewer since 2009. And when, in 2014, Ray Johnson retired as host I was upset yet optimistic to see what direction the show could go under a new host. Robbie Motz got cast and he was good. A good fit for Ray, with charm, humour and likability. Then HE retired as host. Along comes Kaja Martin. In her many episodes, I can't recall ever laughing as the shows concept and fun and charm was being sucked out and replaced with some of the worst humour put into the show. I stopped watching until she stepped down. Then Carlos came. This guy is just as bad, awkward, uncharismatic and really boring. He adds nothing new and just doesn't look into it. There hasn't been a funny episode since 2014, in fact I recommend watching before 2014 to appreciate what this show once was. It's terrible now, but it gets a 3 for Motz's episodes.

All About E (2015)

It's not great
15 January 2016
Let me start off by saying that the films homosexual elements do not have an effect on me whatsoever. In fact there are lesbian movies I enjoy, this wasn't one of them. All About E is a pretty stale movie, without any real substance, it's actually pretty generic. Let me reiterate; the lesbian element of the movie doesn't bother me, however just because it has this doesn't mean it's free of faults. The main actresses have no real chemistry, and that seriously affects their performances. Some of the "love" scenes between them don't work and aren't convincing enough to sell to me that they are really in love, but I don't want to be too harsh.. The only few things of merit are the location shots and some comedic dialogue, that works well enough. But these things are too far and few in between and instead its pretty dull. The films climax wants to make you care about the relationship between the two main actress's, but you just can't! The chemistry is once again not there. Tthe actors are trying to give good performances some of which are great, but others are not at all. The overly dramatic ending comes across as a way for the film to neatly wrap up loose ends. But that in itself is rushed, but to some credit, brought out some good character development, but it was too late in the movie to save it. To conclude, this movie has nothing of real high quality merit, except for the above mentioned things. It's a tame directorial debut with need of improvement, but it can be and I think will be in future movies.

An over enthusiastically confusing film
27 November 2015
As I sat there at the Melbourne premier of Looking for Grace, I sat in confusion for the first 25 minutes as I struggled to see what kind of movie was being played out. The film did gradually slow into a good pace, but the first 25-35 minutes were unbearable. The camera-work and visual aspects of the film were all very well done, mostly due to the location of Western Australia. The interweaving stories worked well however there wasn't much detail or substance to much of it, to make it more easy to follow. But in some parts it was hard to say that it wasn't a missed opportunity. The acting wasn't great, especially for serious scenes, this very much so affected the tone as a serious scene was set up but came across as comedic. Odessa Young was passable. Her performance didn't excel in any scene and for a film with her name making up half the title, you expect that. To conclude, the film did get the story on track with the help of a very surprising moment near the end which was very well set up. But other than that, it came across as dull and confusing. 5/10

I Regret Watching This
2 September 2015
This is one mess of a movie! For those of you who do not know, Smosh is a fairly popular YouTube channel that does comedy sketches. And when they announced a film, I was instantly let down. With many other big YouTubers like Fred, Shane Dawson and Harley making sh*t movies, it was only a matter of time that these two idiots got there nose in there. And from there, I was expecting a really bad movie. This movie is atrocious! From the childish humour, that never gets more than a slight grin, to the laughably bad sets and characters. This movie was just plain awful. The only real redeeming qualities it had was the cameos, which, honestly, while they were fun to see, we're just a way to have Smosh say; "Look at us we can get Lady Gaga in our movie." And by the way, she was just the worst in this mess. The jokes fell flat, the story was dumb and rushed, and above all, it comes across as a big cash grab. Don't see this movie unless you are under 10, then by all means have a blast. But if you don't like dumb humour with no substance, stay well away. 3/10

Predictable but entertaining enough
14 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Jurassic World is a visual spectacle that offers tasteless and non charismatic characters that are barely held together by some fantastic CGI. The characters were slightly bleak and boring like Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard who have the responsibility of holding the movie when the Dino action isn't in play. Speaking of which, the dinosaurs themselves are among the most fantastic characters in the film, as they provide a lot of emotion despite being make believe. The first 30 or so minutes were nostalgic heart tugging establishing shots of the new park which in itself is a debatable topic. Who goes back to a park that saw people get killed? The movie never really explains why and it was a bothering moment I was constantly waiting to be resolved. The final act of this movie were like classic Jurassic park, with great monster action and some great acting too, however the dependence on the Raptors to provide getaways and scares became all to irritating. In conclusion, this film was predictable and at times ridiculously loaded with cheese. But it's still an enjoyable experience that will entertain like it is supposed to. ----- C+

I liked it... A bit
7 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
As I Got back from the avengers I knew I had to review it. The action was really well done, sometimes flawless. The scenes with all the heroes bantering more than made up for the 2 hour plus run time. Ultron was a fantastic villain. His comedic harshness and sense of evil presence added to his very well developed character. I also loved the inclusion of Vision. His scenes, though limited were very entertaining and fun to see progress. Hulk/ Bruve Banner was a very weak character oh my gosh was his and Black Widows romance ever forced.as expected there was amazing CGI through the film. It really took the glass to reality in some scenes. Andy Serkis's cameo was cool to see but it was short lived and felt obligatory. It slowed the story down a bit and added to more unnecessary runtime. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were good but weakly developed. There were some major pacing issues near the start that made the first act seem boring and unwatchable. However it still is a very well made film and it sets up the rest of the MCU projects well.
