Never Have I Ever (2020)
First teen show in a long time that made me cry and laugh
Maybe it's coronatime and being quarantined for so long but I really enjoyed this show! The story of Devi is really relatable and also really shows that being a teenager is pretty universal. The show is funny and has just the right amount of stereotypes you want in a comedy but also has really strong emotional moments that anyone who has ever lost someone can relate to.
The acting is probably not Oscar worthy but overall it was definitely good enough to let me bingewatch all ten episodes in one night. Definite must see if you want a light watch but still want some more meaningful content
Friends: The One with the Football (1996)
One of the worst episodes
Where do I begin on this one?! I love friends but this episode is just cringy. The football rivalry is strange, the Dutch girl is not Dutch at all, Joey pronounces her name better than she does. And then Ross throws in all stereotypes you can think off when Joey and Chandler fight over Marga. As a Dutch person I am kind of offended but I also understand why so many Americans believe we live in windmills and walk around on clogs if this is the picture painted in the media.
Friends have given us some great tv, but this episode is not it.
It Chapter Two (2019)
Where's the horror?
After seeing It chapter one I was already dissapointed, but chapter two was really terrible. All the separate components are amazing, but as a whole? Not so much. Yes, the casting is amazing, costumes and make up departments did great, the direction an sich is great too. Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise does a fantastic job, but the movie never gets scary, at all.
Some things I don't get at all. What does the old woman dancing naked in the background add? I think it was supposed to be a creepy scene, but this just made it funny. Same with Richies jokes. Yes, Bill Hader has incredible talent, but here it just ruined the movie for me.
When I go to a horror movie I want to be scared, to get this uncomfortable feeling, like you do get when watching the Shining for example, or the Haunting of Hill house, wich also mastered this. And let's not forget about Alfred Hitchcock.
It chapter two didn't just lach in horror elements it also took too long. At some point I was just trying to look at my watch in the theater to check how much longer I needed to endure this movie. A lot of scenes just dragged on and took way too long, Bill reaching for Georgie in the sewer e.g. That just took way too long, we all know what's going to happen, so just let it!
Overall, I had a good laugh during some of the movie, but it took too long and for a horror movie it just wasn't scary at all.
Swiped (2018)
What is this
5 minutes into the movie and I already lost track of the story. There is absolutely no development of character, the acting is poor and I don't understand most of the casting choices. Mainly started watching because of Noah Centineo and how he was in To all the boys i loved before, but really doubting his acting skills now.
Also the plot is awful. The guys are pigs and the girls are mostly bimbo's who want the pigs to like them. Not really what you want young people to think the world is like.
Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (2019)
Documentary is better
After seeing Joe Berlinger's incredible documentary and all the buzz around Zac Efron as Ted Bundy I was really excited to see this movie. I was hoping it would shed some more light on why Bundy did what he did and how he got away with it, as well as all this thing with girls being in love with him while he was on trial for murder.
After realizing the movie was based on Liz Kendall's book about her time with Bundy I expected the movie to focus on their relationship and how she found out that something was wrong. Also in the documentary it is stated that she found women's lingerie and other strange items in Bundy's appartment.
Instead, the movie sort of mixes both storylines. The crimes are only very briefly shown, the fact that he kept some of his victims heads and belongings isn't mentioned and it seems more about Bundy claiming his innocence. We all know he wasn't, so even though he did state he didn't do it, giving it so much time in the movie seems wrong.
Overall this movie left me pretty unsatisfied. The casting of the movie is really good, I already knew Zac Efron could be Bundy's long lost Son or something, the resemblance is kind of scary, the costume design department, locations and camera work are very good, it is just the script and storytelling that really put me off.
If you want to enjoy Zac Efron in seventies clothing though, go watch.
Bodyguard (2018)
Suspense, suspense, surprise
I don't think I can really describe how good this show is. I am currently rewatching it, after sitting on the edge of my seat the first time I watched Bodyguard. From scene one you are drawn into the show and the life of David Budd (Richard Madden). It is that I don't feel good rating art 10/10 but otherwise..
Richard Madden is so credible as David Budd and I feel for him every scene. Also Keeley Hawes as Julia Montague, Nina Toussaint-White as Louise Rayburn and especially Anjli Mohindra as Nadia are so impressive in their acting. I can't believe Mohindra hasn't been nominated for any big award following her performance on this show.
As for the story, it is actual, credible and gives some amazing plot twists and other scenarios that will have you on the edge of your seat, even the second time watching it. Especially in the last two episodes things happen that will throw you off your game completely, in a good way. Despite the amazing actors in this show, the best work has been done by the writers creating this masterpiece.
The best part of the show and the story is the suspense, it is not like in horror moties when you expect something to happen every minute, but more a feeling like this can't end well. My compliments to the writers, directors and producers for creating this kind of suspense. And then especially the last episode. That something was going to go down was to be expected, hence the suspense, but this? It was nothing I would've expected and at the same time it was the only logical way for the story to go. The only negative points I have are that the first season was way to short to my liking, can't wait for season 2, and that the enting wasn't logical in my view. I can't believe that two people, having gone through so much, can reunite so easily. I wish the makers would have shown a little bit more in that regard since personal issues following traumas and mental health issues are much more common than you might think and to make getting over such things seem so easy is wrong from my point of view.
Other than that it is a must see, albeit only to remind us that things aren't always what they seem.
Once Upon a Time (2011)
Not a good ending
I started watching this show when it just came out and loved it. However when I started season 2 I found it really confusing. It wasn't until the show came to Netflix that I watched it again. Although at times the show was still sometimes confusing during and after season 1 it also caught me and I found myself intrigued with how the fairytale characters all connected to each other and to storybrooke.
Taking all that in the end of season 6 would have been the perfect ending to the show, giving storybrooke it's happy ending, but somehow they had to make a seventh season focussing on Henry. Although that idea isn't that bad the execution was. Andrew j west is Dimpfy not up to the task of following up on jared gilmore's amazing performance of Henry and seriously Regina as a bartender? It just doesn't make sense. On top of that the seventh season feels rather rushed and not as thought out as the other seasons. A piece of advice: do watch season 1-6 and skip season 7.
Gran Hotel (2011)
Everything you never knew you wanted in a tv show
Rewatched this show numerous times and it gets me every time. The setting of the show (early 1900's), the clothes, a forbidden romance and no character without a secret or two. It all fits together somehow and makes me want to watch another episode and another and another. And each episode ending with a major cliffhanger doesn't help either!
The two main characters, Alicia and Julio, forbidden love is the main story of the show and the chemistry beteren them is obvious. The actors are well-casted and really convinced me of the story they're telling
He's Just Not That Into You (2009)
Watched it a million times!
Love this one every time i see it. The plot might not be that complex or deep but it's very relatable in a fun way. Characters are well-cast and although they're all Hollywood stars and possibly better looking than your average neighbour you can still imagine walking into bradley cooper in the supermarket. The multiple entangled plot also makes it more interesting to watch and keeps you in the movie if, like me, you get bored easily and need something new to draw you back in.
The Alienist (2018)
Amazing show, characters could have been better.
Amazing show! I love thrillers, 19th century and detectives so this is a hit for me. The main leads, Daniël Brühl, Luke Evans and Dakota Fanning are amazing actors.
The killings and investigation really build up the suspense throughout the show. Every episode we learn a little more about the killer. The 19th century time setting and methods for the investigation really add to the suspense and macabe character of the show.
Unfortunately the characters could have been portrayed more in depth, the investigation is now the prime part of the show while (little) more knowledge of the characters and their motivation is only barely revealed in the final episodes.
Overall the story and way it's filmed really spoke to me with the exception of the characters being not fully explored.
Hemlock Grove (2013)
So bizarre and so good
Watching the first episode I could only think: what the hell am I watching here? What is this for weird show? But the weirdness of it just kept me watching and Hemlock Grove is now certainly my favorite show on Netflix.
The show is visually amazing, I really had to remind myself not to eat anything before or while watching the show, and that says something! Also the storyline maybe weird, but somehow it works and Hemlock Grove manages to get away with strange plot changes and introducing mysterious new characters without losing credibility.
Lastly, the acting. I believe the casting is done pretty well. I've read the book as well, and all the main characters are portrayed really well in my opinion.
When watching the show for the first time it feels like a bizarre dream, but when you're under its spell...
Blackfish (2013)
Impressive
Impressive documentary that shows how cruel and despicable people can be when money and status is involved. I hope this is a wake up call for sea world and other animal parks alike. The documentary is well-made. The real-life footage contributes to the authenticity of the film and is at times shocking. Emotions of the trainers and tourists are well-captured. It seems the interviewer knew what questions to ask.
The angle of the documentary is clear from the beginning. Through the talks with experts and trainers and the footage from accidents and the killer whales we get to see why things happened and it makes sense. I'd like to have seen more talk with experts for better verification of the information given, but that is the researcher in me talking.
In conclusion, a very impressive and convincing documentary.
