Extraterrestrial (2014)
UFO enthusiasts will like it . . . others - not so much.
I scored the film quite highly because I genuinely enjoyed about 80% of, but I went into it knowing it wasn't exactly going to be a groundbreaker.
Without wanting to give too much away, it incorporates a lot of UFO mythology and people who are into that kind of thing will probably enjoy it, as I did. The special effects are very well done, for a film without a huge budget and the UFO's are genuinely ominous and 'other - worldly'.
The plot isn't too bad really, it ends in an interesting way that you probably won't expect and there are some scenes in the last 20 minutes that are actually quite spectacular.
It's bad points though - the actors are a bit annoying and not very endearing. The main couple are quite nice and their story plays out well, but everybody else in it seems to just be there to add filler to the plot. One of the guys in it is actually very annoying, from start to unfortunate end.
It's all a bit loud and flashy and over the top in parts as well. The musical score is definitely not up to a very high standard in my opinion.
I think it deserves a little more respect than some reviewers have given it - but not much. ;-)
The Space Between Us (2017)
A very under-rated film - if you aren't expecting something totally different!
I think this film is one of those that hasn't always received good views because it's difficult to work out exactly what genre it is supposed to be in. It's got too much romance to really be sci-fi. It's got too much sci-fi to really be a romance. It's sci - fi isn't believable enough for sci fi fans, but it still probably puts off a lot of the kind of audience it's aimed at. It's too serious to be a RomCom, but it's a bit too whimsical and downright silly at times to be taken really seriously as well. It's written and filmed like a grand, far - reaching epic tale, but it tells a really childlike and almost simple story. I won't give any spoilers, but to be honest, it IS quite a predictable movie, but even that is something that is dealt with in a way that adds to the charm of the idea and makes it comfortable, familiar and easy to watch. It actually has a lot of aspects of very old and well tried themes from classic tales that were told long before NASA or bases on mars were ever conceived of. There is a little bit of Pinocchio, a bit of romeo and Juliet, things like that. Asa Butterfield plays a brilliant part and I can't imagine many others who could have played the part so well. Gary Oldman isn't as good, but still believable in his role and Britt Robertson is a bit challenged by some cheesy lines and character flaws, but still manages to play the part pretty well and is very likable throughout.
It probably could have been 20 minutes shorter and been better for it. There are some pretty unbelievable scenes and it is kind of a strange film in many ways, but it's a lovely story. It's a really easy film to spend a couple of hours watching. It's effects are very well done and look very convincing. In fact the whole movie is actually very nicely filmed, technically and it stands out as having good production values and standards. It's a bit clunky here and there but it's just plain nice and worth at least one watch for pretty much anyone. If it doesn't cheer you up then you have a cold, cold heart!
Dark Summer (2015)
Well worth a watch
A compelling and interesting story that builds slowly enough to be easily understood and atmospheric but is short enough and has enough action not to be boring. To say much about the plot would probably spoil it but for a film with very few actors and a very limited set it has quite good scope. All of the actors play good parts and though some of the script may be a bit clunky it is all believable enough to pass. There isn't a lot of gore so if you're looking for a slash and splash horror film this probably isn't for you but what there is looks very realistic and there are enough scary and gory moments to justify it's rating. I thought all the blood effects in this film looked very real. Though thankfully I don't see real pools of blood in my life too often! I may be a bit biased though and I definitely gave it a better score for the fact that Keir Gilchrist has rather a lot of shirtless scenes. ;-) If you are a fan of him then you will probably like this movie more!
Inbred (2011)
A truly, surprisingly enjoyable and compelling little film!
This is the kind of film where the trailer doesn't really do it justice. To show the best of the film in the trailer would spoil the plot, so it seems to just set the mood instead.
Encountering this film on the late night horror channel - which usually shows some pretty dismal stuff I wasn't expecting much but i got a surprise. Quite a few actually . . .
The cast is great and in many ways the 'inbred' characters are as entertaining and, dare I say - endearing as the heroes and heroines. UK watchers will notice a few well known faces playing characters that are really outside their usual roles, which may make the film more entertaining to a British audience than an American one but I think the scenes of camp gore and torture would satisfy anybody who claims to be a horror fan.
There are some great moments, some shocking moments and certainly some surprises. Don't expect a cerebral plot or an exercise in deep meaning, but do expect some great tributes to classic horror, some genuinely entertaining performances and a slick little production that proves just how good British film making can still be.
