Tales of the Unexpected: My Lady Love, My Dove (1980)
It Has Elaine Stritch
And Elaine Stritch is all it has...well, Lisa Eichorn is always a treat. But it feels like there is no real script or direction. I've come to expect more from Tales of the Unexpected and, I'm usually not disappointed. The ladies talents were wasted here.
The Moving Finger (1963)
Glad I Found This
I didn't have very high expectations but was hopeful. I didn't think I'd find as rich of a period gem as Corman's "Bucket of Blood" or "Little Shop of Horrors." I was pleasantly drawn in by the opening soundtrack. The whole movie was full of wonderful music. I'll be hearing it in my head for a long time. The storyline was decent and almost believable. The acting was not bad; some of it was very good. And yes, some of it was pretty awful. Barry Newman as the lead beat has been criticized as being too clean cut for the part. Remember, this was before The Summer of Love and long hair on men was still very, very rare. In my opinion, he was suitably disheveled for a beat. Angel was quite stiffly portrayed, tho if I was a young woman involved with Lionel Stander, I guess I'd be a bit stiff, too. The ending was sort of predictable but satisfying. I'll watch it again.
The Beast of Yucca Flats (1961)
I Enjoyed it and I Didn't Feel Guilty
Yes, the acting is hokey. The budget is so low, a snake couldn't crawl underneath. It taught us that bullets do not kill even if you do finally hit your target. I won't even discuss the direction, cinematography, editing. Somehow though, it came together to make an enjoyable movie. The two little boys were adorable. The monster inspired pity. The narration and the parts with the law enforcement officers reminded me of the cop shows from the black and white era. I don't know if it was meant to be tongue in cheek but I took it that way. I really liked it for what it was; Low budget, Cold War paranoia. There were better examples of the genre. There were also worse. A lot worse.
Mortuary (2005)
Best If You Know What You're In For
If you're looking for a straight up horror movie, this will disappoint. It's done along the lines of "Return of the Living Dead," in that it has suspense, gore, terror and tongue in cheek humor. The acting is campy, though the actress playing Jamie is very, very good. The rest of the cast is reminiscent of James Karen and Thom Mathews from the first two "Return of the Living Dead" movies. It was fun to see Bug Hall again. The premise and ending are also similar to those movies. But don't think "Mortuary" is a clone of them. It certainly stands alone and any similarity is not unlike the similarity between any movies of the same genre. I enjoyed it very much and will count it as one of those movies to be watched at least one more time...if not many more.
