Old (2021)
Disaster
I always think Shyamalamalan is underrated. I like almost all of his movies. Except of course the last airbender one. But this movie... is beyond ugly.
The premise is great but boy oh boy the writing, the acting, the lines. It's excruciating to watch. Don't watch this. Shyamalalalalan's worst yet.
Mortal Kombat (2021)
Would rate it higher if there is no Cole Young
I'm sorry but I really don't like Cole Young character. I don't connect to the story because of him.
That aside, great action sequence and decent CGI.
Adrift (2018)
Too many unnecessary flashbacks
This could be a decent disaster movie if only there weren't so many unnecessary flashbacks! This movie doesn't need that much romantic contents to make us believe the characters are in love!
It's frustrating to watch!
The Road (2009)
A complete nightmare... In a good way
This movie represents the two things I am most afraid of in the world.
1. What if I can't provide for my family
2. Can I protect my family from the cruel that it is today
The world in The Road is post apocalyptic, and there are tons of other movies like this out there. The Book if Eli is the closest thing I can think of.
But what got me the most is that the love of the Man for the Boy. How he would go to such length for him and it got me thinking of myself and my daughter.
The story is fiction but close to reality. Watching it, I can't help but to think that with the current state of the world (the conflict, the hate, the intolerant, the war) is not too far from The Road's world. And that what scares me the most.
The Night Comes for Us (2018)
Plot what plot
This is my fifth Indonesian action movie. Unfortunately, all of them have one problem: no heart to the story. I can't relate to the characters, I don't care if they live or die, I don't even know their motivation.
This movie, like the other Indonesian action movies, rely too much on blood and gore. The plot, pfft, out the window.
Thor: The Dark World (2013)
An upgrade
Ever since I watched the first Thor movie, I had this feeling that this superhero will not evolve into a great movie. Because frankly, Thor 1 sucked. This sequel proves me, well, almost wrong.
There are three things this movie improved: 1. plot 2. visual effect 3. character development
For the first point, I think Marvel - ever since the Avengers - has been working a lot on a serious and full of twists plot. This movie tried to do that but I think they could do a little better. There are a lot of ends that they could expand, such as: when Jane was in possession of the Aether, she had visions and strange things happening to her body that Thor thought he had to bring her in to Asgard to cure. But instead of curing and before anything big enough for the story could happen to her, Malekith sucks the Aether out of her. The story could elaborate on how Thor tries to save her instead of letting her roam lazily doing nothing in Asgard.
Or is it an attempt to clash Jane with Sif who also has feelings for Thor? If it were then I don't think this movie gives you enough of that. Or is it the prelude to Thor 3 which would open up more on Jane and Asgard? This one we shall wait and see.
Visual effect: average. I don't see anything new in this movie that I haven't seen before in any other movie. Nothing I could elaborate. Harry Potter movies have better ideas on this one.
As for character development, this movie is moving so fast that the characters had no chance to introduce and tell us if they have something more than we see in the screen. Loki has a riff of emotion in this story but that too felt too quick and premature. Even the ending is weird for me.
All in all, a good movie but it could use a little more improvement.
Carrie (2013)
Weak
I love Chloe Moretz and have been anticipating her movies. I expect a lot from this one as well but I came out a little bit disappointed. Carrie is not Chloe's best performance although I can see that she gave her all out in this movie.
Note that I did not watch the previous movies and did not read the book, but judging from this movie alone, Carrie is lacking in a lot of ways. The camera works are just somewhere between the average zone while the acting is simply ordinary. Julianne Moore who plays the mother performed well but not exceptional. The rest of the casts are just the same. I can't feel any emotions coming out of the movie.
This is a movie you soon forget. And even though I love Chloe, I cannot give this movie more than just 4 stars.
Iron Man Three (2013)
Epic yet Dissatisfying
It's epic.
But only for the action sequences for the story is lacking. Like the Dark Knight Trilogy that gives you an ending that lowers the bar for the previous two installments, this one does exactly that. Although the plot is greatly expanded - it's the aftermath of The Avengers - and digs deep into Stark's brilliant mind and into his psychological state after the event, it is shallow.
The improvement the movie did is they put Paltrow in a suit - which is a great nod to the comic book reference of Pepper Potts being another suited-hero named "Rescue" -, but then they took Happy - the ever funny and interesting sidekick/driver of Stark - out of the picture by blowing him half to hell in the beginning of the movie. Though that was probably Favreau's personal request to not to be included in the movie further than that, but still, this movie needs a character like him.
The thing that really put this movie off for me is probably the magical reference that the terrorist used. It's a scientific breakthrough made for medical purposes to regenerates one's cells rapidly(or whatever it was), it enabling them to grow cut off limbs in a second - this is probably Spongebob Squarepant's reference - emitting heat from the inside of their bodies, exploding like a nuclear even, and breath out fire which I found really ridiculous.
And the downfall was when they revealed the truth that the master villain introduced in the trailers - The Mandarin - is not really a villain at all. He is just a puppet used by Aldrich Killian, a long and agitated acquaintance of Stark with vengeance towards him, which obsessed in ruling the world and getting Pepper. Although a nice twist it was, I just did not feel the kick to it.
Plus sides, the casts are devastatingly amazing. Downey, Jr.'s portrayal of a traumatized man from his encounter with aliens is awesome as ever, Paltrow did a fair one, Ben Kingsley was amazing and the rest of them - including the horde of unmanned iron-man suits at the end of the movie - are incredible. Like I said in the beginning, the action sequence was EPIC with capital. You get to see various technological advance created by Stark and stunning action scenes with humor on top.
It's a great movie and I would watch it again, be it in cinemas or DVD but it won't change the fact that the story is lacking depth. They tried though and the outcome is a wonderful movie.
Watch it.
Gravity (2013)
It pulls you
I got hooked by this movie since I saw the trailer of it and the actual movie exceeded my expectation. Gravity is a survival themed movie and different from the rest of its predecessors - or at least those I have seen - there is nothing in this movie that really seems threatening. Unlike in a natural disaster movie where you can see the earth moves and bends trying to swallow the main character, or vicious animals that lurks in the dark and jumps out to eat people. This movie offers none of that but you can feel the tension, the anxiety and the rush of Doctor Ryan Stone (played by the still mesmerizing Sandra Bullock) trying to survive in space.
90% of the movie takes place in outer space with no sound and little light which is superb since it's true to the fact that you can't hear anything with no oxygen. Stunning camera works and visual effects. Almost Final Fantasy-ish in animation but better than Avatar.
The acting is marvelous just how you would expect from Bullock and Clooney - who is once again retains the role of a no-care-in-the-world tough guy. But the spotlight is indeed on Bullock. It must be hard to act on a movie where the entire thing revolves on your acting because this movie has no one except her to do all the acting.
The story is, well, there is no story. It just about how space is, a person who got lost in it and trying to get home. It could be a little boring for some because the movie is slow paced and centers around in the psychological state of the characters and the depiction of live in space instead of all the actions. But if you like simple movies that digs deep into the characters' mind then you surely will enjoy this.
All in all, this movie is fantastic. Watch it in 3D if you have the chance (because i didn't) and it should be better in it. A 9/10.
