Michelle Yeoh Must-See Movies

Hollywood is “rediscovering” Michelle Yeoh but she’s been kicking ass since the late 1980s. These are the essential Michelle Yeoh movies.
My Favorite Women-directed Movies

We shouldn't need to highlight the gender of the director but we do -- cuz it's still so massively lopsided. somedayitwontmatter

Movies I Really Like That Weren't Necessarily Great Movies

These titles aren’t perfect masterpieces and none of them were huge hits. But I can watch them over and over again.
Asian-American feature films released in the US since the 1980s
32 titles |

In celebration to the August 2018 release of "Crazy Rich Asians", here is a list of feature films released in the past couple of decades that are Asian American. By "Asian American", I mean: features a mostly or significantly Asian American cast (not Asian nationals) and is set mostly in America (i.e., the story doesn't transpire in Asia … but I snuck in a Canada-set movie). I include South Asian Indians. Only feature-length movies released in cinemas (no TV series, no shorts, no documentaries, no streaming-only movies … though I made an exception for my wife’s wonderful short film!).
My Favorite "Feminist" Movies

Public
"Feminist" in quotes because these movies are less about being forthrightly political -- they're certainly not agit-prop -- and more about telling dimensional stories of women at the center of their own narratives.

A movie I'm actually in love with

Lyrical, impressionistic, startling, and resonant. I have been in love (I still am), I have been lonely and wanting a way out, I have felt lost in the big city, and I have been struck dumb by moments of coincidence, whimsy, and happenstance ... this movie captures all those feelings perfectly - wrapped around a subtext of China's reclamation of Hong Kong and all the anxieties and uncertainties that brought. The emotional pitch of the film is astounding. And the humor and smile-inducing moments are truly original. Absolutely lovely.
