Deadwood: I Am Not the Fine Man You Take Me For (2006)
one of the best episodes
Deadwood surprised me from the offset and quickly became one of my favorite shows. I like all kinds of Western, but the excellent camera work, the impeccable play of several actors, and the great script achieved such a dramatic force that I can hardly believe that anything will soon best this series. This episode is outstanding, and the best one so far in the show, although I haven't watched it to the end yet (together with perhaps the last episode of the second series).
SPOILER ALERT!!! Just think about the bloodcurdling play Cy makes when the Reverend visits him, the scene between Bullock and his wife and the tea, the action in the Gem, Alma's abortion, and Adams' joke which made me laugh out loud, although I rarely do that when I am sitting alone :)), about them being ducklings trailing Al. Just love it! So sad there were only three seasons.
Creep (2004)
lame plot, good gore
Not amongst the best 2004 horrors there are, but not the worst either. I could hardly struggle through the first half of the movie which was quite superficial, a bit teen- and weed-horror-like (with surprisingly witty little twists nevertheless, like the Clooney date). The weakest side of this movie is undoubtedly the storyline: dull, unsurprising, not satisfactorily detailed. The second part of the movie however had some fine gore in it. The four minutes long scene with Craig, the saw, and the little bum girl whose name I forgot is quite memorable. The actor impersonating Craig had arguably the best performance, both Kate and George acting silly and unnatural sometimes. I give it a 4.
Mission: Impossible (1996)
stunningly shallow
I've finally come to see this terrible movie, and I'm still not done shaking my head in disappointment. Classic tale of pure good and pure evil, plus saving the world, plus wolf turned into sheep, I mean into a beautiful woman burglar with whom the main hero evidently falls in love, plus redemption through self-sacrifice, plus obliterating all bad guys with a casual ease, plus.... And all these pluses add up to a terribly big minus. This is a spy flick even worse and lamer than James Bond. It is as far from being realistic as it gets. Virtually nothing that TomCruise does smells like reality. Watch it, if you think that magnificent stunts and burning kerosene and pleasing your twisted need for grandeur are what a good movie is made of. The two good things about the movie are the stunts, bravely done (but absolutely unrealistic for the setting); and the soundtrack that is quite decent. For these two, I give this movie a weak 3. It wasn't worth the time.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Distant characters, plot is a commonplace, the film a mess.
Wow! It is unbelievable how weak this movie is. It is so full of flaws that they seem interconnected between so that the few moments of real acting and art are washed away by the erratic stream of less-than-mediocre story-waving. The plot is flat and trite, full of the usual American brainwashing blurb about how there's a hero in everyone, about benevolence, the dream of justice, and so on. In fact, the characters (with the exception of Mary Jane, perhaps) are acted out as if they weren't really alive and had no spiritual bond between them whatsoever. They just cannot feel, they only act stupidly and get caught in the web of artificiality and commonplaces. Sincerely, if Americans can recognize themselves in these characters, I feel great sorry for them, for in that case they do not know what human compassion, human warmth really means. ...OK, I must nevertheless recognize that the scene when Spidey stops the train went berserk and loses his mask, is very moving and inspiring. And the end is very pleasing, with a very human and intelligent Octavius who is back to his senses. Not the worst super hero movie I've seen after all, but it would have been much better without the usual soapy American moralizing nonsense.
Funny Games (1997)
The most horrific excellent movie
This is the most horrific excellent movie I have ever seen. I was agonizing throughout the whole 104 minutes, it tortured me savagely. I must say that I am no pussy as I guess I have seen the most shocking movies ever made, including Guinea Pig, The Man Behind the Sun, lots of exploitation, dark and I dunno what other movies and I have never turned my head away, not even for a blink. But this one I could hardly bear it. What could possibly be more frightening than the possibility to become the suffering side in an awful and sadistic game that ultimately aims at our torture and destruction, and that takes place in your very home, and be able to do absolutely nothing about it? The couple of youngsters really freaked me out. There is no Pinhead or Leatherface that could outperform in brutality a teenager gone loose. Think of Columbine, and do not forget to watch this movie and bow your head.
Gummo (1997)
An amazing, brutal pice of art
An absolutely amazing movie, perhaps one of the best I have ever seen. Go vote, and you will see why it is rated so low: there are lots of maximum and minimum votes and this kind of balances things. I guess this means that there were lots of people who have been just as stunned and shocked by this deeply impressive piece of art, and on the other hand there were lots of people who just did not get anything from the message which is quite sad, if you give it a second thought. For it is our own stupidity that we do not recognize the real value in front of our very eyes. Just think about the hand-fighting scene of the murderous brothers, or how one of the little guys beating up the "rabbit" grabs his crotch, and you will actually be frightened to visit Ohio :)
