Prisoners (2013)
dark, unflinching
This is a hard one to watch, though ultimately fulfilling. What would you do if one of your kids up and vanished? Prisoners asks this question.
Grasping at straws? Lashing out at those around you? Drinking? Taking the law into your own hands? Some of these are delved into in Prisoners and the caliber of cast makes it a must watch.
The camera work and detail makes me wish I had seen it in a movie theater. It's all depressingly blue and green. The movie isn't depressing, you'll be on the edge of your seat.
I don't know the director of this film, but he knows what he's doing. I will watch for his future work based on this film.
Ferocious (2013)
not bad
Leigh is an actress. A famous one by the looks of it. But she still finds time for the fans and to return home. But things are never so perfectly laid out.
Darker tones come into play as we learn there may be an ulterior motive in her return home. I'll stop there, but as you can guess, things go wrong, both for her and everyone she comes into contact with. In a way, this is very timely. But sometimes it also feels like it's been done. Not saying it has been done, but that it felt like it had. Ferocious has a small cast and not much of a budget. But there's bang for their buck. Kim Coates steals the show. He's creepy as all get out. The other actors are good too, though I don't know any of them. I'll give it a 6. It's not incredible, but it's better than most thrillers which are increasingly paint by numbers.
V/H/S (2012)
yeah yeah yeah
I read the reviews of people thinking it was boring, yeah, yeah. But the truth is - people are conditioned to expect very specific things in horror - and when a movie deviates from that, many are left confused.
This is not a great film. But at the very least, it's trying something new. The guys trashing the house and finding the tapes was well done.
For my money, the best story was the one with the weird and clingy girl who gets stranger as the night goes on. It's all very auditory and hallucinogenic.
Worth checking out. Never said it was great, but it's def okay. If all you like is standard horror, stay away.
The Conjuring (2013)
scary scary scary
I don't know about renting this at home, but in a theater? It was rather scary. True, some of the scares were of the cat jumping out of the closet variety, but some were not.
I find it refreshing that horror movies seem to be going back to their roots. This is a good example of that in my opinion.
A family moves into a house (where have I seen that before??) and strange stuff starts to happen. The family brings in some well regarded ghost hunters (there's another term they use to describe themselves, but I can't remember what it is).
There's the usual stuff---a face in a window--a secret room--someone locked in the attic and the door suddenly won't open, but STILL. I had goosebumps.
