Schindler's List (1993)
An Over-hyped Crawling Drama
Steven Spielberg is a master at picking up the theme. He knows that holocaust is the best theme to sell in USA, just as Indo-Pak war seems to be the best theme in India.
Poorly made and edited, this movie is just an ordinary piece of work good only in patches. At a few instances, brilliant acting from the lead actors does overshadow shoddy direction, but even that cannot make up for non-existent script.
Effect are poorly executed and movie seems a partial representation of facts without allowing the viewer to form his own point of view by depicting a neutral stance.
Watch without high expectations, else you might feel let down.
Dhoom:2 (2006)
A Horrible Disaster: Avoid to Prevent Hangovers for Days to Come
I am really appalled by the levels to which this paper - Times of India has deteriorated. It gave Dhoom II 3.5/5 - what utter nonsense. Keep in mind, it was rated ahead of movies like Hera Pheri and Dus in its genre.
It seems quite clear that they have entered a sort of tacit understanding with Big Banners like Johars and Chopras - when they get a least rating of 3/5 for every crap they make.
Coming Back to the Movie, it has nothing going for it - An Absent Plot, a overacting idiotic looking Aish, an awful Hrithik and horrible sense of Direction.
Hrithik is one actor who had lots of promise but has been very unidimensional in presentation. He has started boring me to death now and in Dhoom, quite like the rest of his movies, he repeats the same antics. Appears Horrible in Action Sequences too.
Aishwarya looks the silliest I have ever seen her, and the itsy bitsy dress does not make her look any nicer. A Starved body is all we get.
Less Said the Better. Avoid it at any cost.
Hulchul (2004)
An above average comedy that can be watched if you have got some spare time
Priyadarshan succeeds when he chooses to portray a meaningless theme on screen. Fights between two families of the boy and girl with all the ridiculous theories is commonplace over trivial issues and in the end their love lords over the enmity. What makes you laugh your heart out is superb acting by Arshad Warsi, Paresh Rawal, and Aksay Khanna who has finally come of age and the complete meaninglessness of the plot that leaves you stunned that whether a more meaningless plot can ever be carved out. Anyway a good light movie that should surely be watched at least once but not more than that.
The gahamagahmi scenes which created such a classic out of Hera-Pheri once again makes a comeback towards the end with a foolish marriage ceremony culminating with hero succeeding in putting the Varmala in its proper place.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Once in a lifetime movie
An excellent movie that can surely move you a bit. It throws open the question that can we really have prisons which are redemption centers in the true sense. At the same time, it redefines the word criminal. Are the heinous acts committed by administrative authorities justifiable by any means. There should be a code of conduct for the authorities and a HOLY PRISON MAINTENANCE BIBLE if any reformation has to take place. The movie goes through several touching incidents and may bore you a bit if you rarely sees serious touching movies and are fans of slick sci-fi thrillers moving at extraordinary pace like Matrix etc. However the exceptional acting by lead stars particularly by Morgan Freeman and the picking up of the tempo in the second half will leave you gasping for more. After Citizen Kane, Casablanca & Godfather, it is another classic that will stay in the echelons of the movie rating lists for long. There are a few weak points though. There was insufficient attention given to some characters and movie portrays just one side of the whole story not remaining fair to the prison authorities. And finally if it was told in a non-linear tale then it would have been much more interesting
