Paul (2011)
Feels like a classic
Okay, let me get this out of the way first...If Edgar Wright had been on board, this would have been the greatest film since...Ever. As it stands, it's not perfect. But it's pretty close. Since everyone else has gone over the plot, I won't bother (BTW, the "three tits" gag is supposed to be a running one...Think "you've got red on you" from Shaun) except to say the in-jokes really are fantastic. Like another reviewer here, sometimes I was the only one laughing - It makes you feel a bit loony! The genuine warmth and sweetness of Paul makes up for the slightly crude humour, he's no ET - But I defy anyone to dislike him. I'm not a fan of Seth Rogan at all, but I don't agree that he was a mistake in casting. I found him quite pleasant to listen to! Simon and Nick are unsurpassable as always, Ms Wiig I admit I found mildly annoying but she has some funny lines, and the plot trots along nicely - Look out for the line when Graeme is drawing Paul. I nearly choked on my popcorn XD
Rude, crude, adorable, sweet - Well worth seeing. I'll be first in line for the sequel (provided Simon and Nick are writing). And I want to take Paul home!
Guest House Paradiso (1999)
Bottom: The Movie
Okay, this may not be the most sophisticated movie you'll ever see. Actually, there isn't a bit of "sophisticatedlyness"* in it. It's puerile, adolescent, inoffensive, idiotic..And utterly hilarious. Basically, Richie and Eddie run the worst hotel in Britain. Cue some ridiculous antics with the guests while they beat each other up, try to get the rent money out of the only resident who is daft enough to stay, have an all night drinking binge with the boys from the power plant next door...And fall in lust with the beautiful actress who comes to stay to avoid the press. Give it a try if you're a fan of Rik and Ade and their work. If you're not...Don't get the movie. Simple as that.
*I'm not being thick, this is a word from another one of Rik's fab jaunts into the movie world ^_^
Filthy Rich & Catflap (1987)
Give it a try!
After reading a LOT of really negative comments about this series, I admit I was fully prepared to hate it. Nevertheless, I trawled thru my local DVD shop, found a copy, brought it home and settled down to watch the first ep. Three hours later, still giggling like a loon, I went around telling everyone they HAVE to watch this. I agree it's kinda like "The Young Ones" grown up, and could be Richard Richard and Eddie Hitler before they were quite such sad losers, but it's so much more. Okay, the satire isn't exactly biting but it's nibbling at least. If you're a fan of Rik and Ade, give this a try. It's a very underrated comedy that you have to make your own mind up about, but I don't think you'll be disappointed. I leave you with one of my fave quotes...
Richie: So you don't like the police, eh? Next time you've been beaten up, try calling an alternative comedian!
The Magic Roundabout (2005)
I'm gonna see it for the THIRD time!
When I went to see this movie (the first time) I wasn't expecting to be all that impressed. I'm a wee bit too young to remember a lot of the Magic Roundabout from the seventies, but I did recall it was a bit lacking in the plot department.
That hasn't really changed much.
However, the jokes are laugh-out-loud funny, the characters lovable (especially Dylan...See if you can keep a straight face when he catapults Brian into the air), and the soundtrack can get you jiving in your seat should the mood take you. (Note Dylan and Ermintrude's version of "You Really Got Me"...Class!)
Okay, so maybe it's not the old stop-motion cartoon of yesteryear, and maybe the cast has had a makeover and a bunch of big names taking over their voices, but there is a lot to enjoy about this film. If you go with young kids, be ready for the funny looks when you're giggling away at the jokes that go right over their heads.
