The Quick and the Dead (1995)

waste of time

I'm sorry, but when Sharon Stone's character knocks her antagonist 20 feet with a slow right cross, the movie lost me. Further, the western town seemed more like a scene from Harry Potter, than an actual believable locale. Why can't Hollywood accept that women are women, not small men, and celebrate this? Further, the weapons used, and the way the characters use them, seem more in line with 21st century laser assisted Gloks than actual firearms from the period. The reports from each reminded me of the impact of LAWS rocket on armored targets. The plot was about as believable as most of these films where women overpower men in their own arenas, ridiculously overstaged and hopelessly unbelievable.

A lot of fun

This film was enjoyable even to a 50 year old movie buff like me. It actually reminded me of all the fantasies I had growing up in the 50's-60's. An old WWII airplane that could do anything, adventures all over the world, a mad scientist to defeat and a beautiful girl to ride along. No gore or twisted plot line, just simple good guy vs. bad guy. The robots were even perfect, reminding me of the kinds of toys I always thought were the most fun. It's not deep, but very entertaining and my guess is there are a lot of older guys out there that would think the same thing, if they give it a chance. I watched it with my 16 yr. old and we both enjoyed it, which should tell you something.

Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 Hours 11 Minutes (1965)

Safe for family viewing and an air-buff's delight.

Excellent movie that tries to capture the magic of flight during that period of history. The characters are all simply fun to get to know. They take a bit of license with the flying details, but the methods used to create the flying scenes were novel at the time. To me, much better than today's digital fakery. There was much thought involved in the re-creation of the "flying machines' shown. While the engines had to be "souped up" for safe performance, the actual airframes and model types were as true to original as possible. Don't miss the vintage automobiles shown either, as the Rolls Royce used by Lord Rawnsley is worth millions. A great candidate for a remake, as the plot would still be interesting today, ......but probably wishful thinking. I simply loved this film.
